Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Melanie

Our new school year starts here on January 27th so we certainly haven't started back. I'm in the midst of planning and purchasing for a new school year.

No school for us yet. We are busily packing for our move(which our extended family has taken to calling our "annual cross-continent migration." ) It'll probably be February before we start up again.
Maybe I'll just claim to be on Australian time.

Wow, so on Australian time, I'm actually ahead! Or...half a year behind?

We were supposed to start today but decided to go help dear friends with their farm in PA this weekend. I left the school area a mess and decided Monday we would deal with it.
We got snowed in in PA and got back today, so right now, I am not sure when we will start. Wednesday, perhaps?

Well, we're starting slowly ... 18yod is still home this week, so that makes it hard. Also, we're planning to formally school thru mid-June (when dh gets off) so we don't worry overly much about getting in the days so soon.

Today we did cleaning and purging; tomorrow, we'll start with copywork, reading and math and errands; then by Thursday (Wed is co-op), we'll be back almost full-day!

Don't you love the flexibility of home-educating?

Oh and then of course I ran to the local teacher store only to have my son quizzed by an obvious teacher about whether he was back at school (since many school districts didn't go back today). He told her he was homeschooled. She said "ohh, so do you do school all day?" He replied "no, not really."

While we were visiting family this Christmas, one of my friends(who is skeptical of homeschooling, of course) asked my 6yo if she liked doing school at home. My daugher replied, "Oh we don't really do school. My mom doesn't teach us much."

Everyone just stared at me.

I ended up cracking a joke about how great it is that she doesn't even realize what she does everyday is school.

Whatever. It worked.

Laura

NSW's dates are
Term 1:Wednesday, 27 January to Thursday, 1 April

Term 2: Monday, 19 April to Friday, 2 July

Term 3:Monday, 19 July to Friday, 24 September

Term 4:Monday, 11 October to Friday, 17 December

and of course we have our public holidays, I think I read somewhere once that Australia has more public holidays than any other country (it's all the unions you see ) Actually most of the public hols fall in the school hols

New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Queen’s Birthday,
Bank Holiday, Labour Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day

All the other states and territories school terms are similar they just overlap by a week ie Queensland breaks up a week before NSW and goes back a week before (less traffic on the roads that way) except for Tasmania they only have three terms but then they aren't too sure if they belong to Australia or not. (sorry Aussie joke here )
