We do a lot of our read alouds in the car, with books on tape. We recently read/listened to Cheaper By the Dozen. It was fabulous! I laughed so hard I cried as my husband sat by with smirks on his face - he is the father through and through. I'm waiting for Morse Code messages to be painted on our walls!!!
Also Caddie Woodlawn, a great Civil War book, not necessarily about the war, but living during that time.
And, Across Five Aprils, great book, sad in parts (brother dies), but a wonderful read.
The Wheel on the School is GREAT!!!!!!!! And we're in the middle of the Catholic Outlaws of Ravenhurst!! AWESOME!!!
Also Red Sails to Capri, Henry Huggins, Twenty One Balloons.
I can't beleive I never read these books when I was a kid! (I did turn out ok, I think!).

Seconding Freddy the Pig and Phantom Tollbooth and Caddie Woodlawn and adding Joan Aiken's Wolves of Willoughby Chase and I *think* Sensible Kate by Doris Gates (but it's been a while). Another (maybe too obvious?) favorite was Secret Garden. I made the sickly boy have an evil, whiny voice at first. The kids loved to hate him.

DEFINITELY! My kids always ask Rick to read these to them for night read-alouds ... can't tell you how many times they've been thru Bantry Bay, Mitchells and all the others .... They love 'em

One book that enthralled my kids was Rolf and the Viking Bow. I've just read The Red Keep, also by Allen French, and can see potential for a read-aloud with that one, too.
Thanks for starting this thread. It brings back great memories and reminds me that my older kids need read-alouds as well.

Nothing new to add,...just seconding "Rolf and the Viking Bow" (I LOVED it!) and thirding the Bantry Bay and Mitchell series (which I have just begun rereading with my younger set.) I have all boys, and they loved them. Being a girl myself, I can vouch for the female set.
The one thing, when I read aloud, I really get into the characters, and wind up speaking with some enthusiastic accents (not hard to do with the way Bantry Bay books are written!) With Rolf and the Viking Bow, I started reading with, I guess, a nordic flair. My boys think I am a bit eccentric at times!
God Bless,
