Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our tree is still up and per the request of my husband will probably stay up for quite some time! It's artifical and I don't mind it being up....I love the lights and have been using it as a night-light for the night time feedings.

If I remember right I've read on Elizabeth Foss' blog of how one year her tree was still up on Valentine's Day so she turned it into a Valentine's Tree....I really like that idea so may just do that myself with ours!

Dh is doing this as we speak. He sent me to find a mop bucket to put the mix in then on to make coffee. I can handle that.

My living room is going to be so clean. We just got back from the store where we bought a child-safety gate. I told dh that we never had to buy one with our 5 children and now, for our 16 yr old dog, we've had to cave in and get one.

Ours came down today under protest from the kids per my dh's request. I dont normally take it down until after the Epiphany. But our next few weeks are super hectic and he was worried it would still be up at Valentines Day

I'm thinking the Baptism of our Lord. It is only just now beginning to feel like the Holidays around here. Besides, every year when the pretty lights come down it sends me to bluesville. Oh, btw the tree in the picture is the one at work, I don't have a picture of ours yet so it can't come down yet - I wonder how long I can procrastinate by using that excuse?

Took the tree down yesterday. Good riddance, evil blue spruce! I do miss the lights though. Our nativity scene will stay up until Candlemas.

Yes, we took ours down yesterday. It looks so bare now. Little Mary was upset, but the older girls were happy to have the house back to "normal" again! We were loving the memories though! My son's friend came over just in time, and they helped us lift the big boxes up into the garage attic. Wow, I got lucky!!

Happy New Year!

Our tree is still up. I might start taking a few decorations down gradually this week, but since Christmas doesn't end until next Sunday with the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord, I don't feel rushed. But then again, I have an artificial tree.

Mine is not artificial (or permanent as a friend once told me), but it still looks pretty nice. I usually leave it up until Epiphany, but I am thinking that I may wait until the Baptism of our Lord before taking it down. I do think that I will leave some of the other decor up until Candlemas specifically the nativity and some of the greenery.

I think thursday the 7th will be a good day.

Ours came down yesterday and the kids are glad to not have to pick up decorations from all over the house thanks to the 2 year old!

Nativity will be up through Candlemas but there is a major problem....

WE CAN'T FIND BABY JESUS!

I hid it so well this year that we can't find him! Please say a little prayer that baby Jesus make it to the manger

This used to be me...until I gave him a 'parking place' on the top shelf of the china cabinet...all 3 of Him...LOL

The tree? Well...tree down! tree down!...can you hear the sirens blaring?

We got a beautiful gift from the twins this year..they sprung for the tree after selling a quilting project they made with their grandmother to someone at her work. It was a beautiful Fraser Fir. The only problem? It had a few bends in the trunk (but it still stood straight up) and that made it want to fall...and fall it did...6! times... We had it anchored to the walls at 4! count'em...4 points...

Talk about detachment...we lost a lot of ornaments. sigh! That possessed tree is going out to the curb today. All of the other decorations are staying up though. My house is too small to wait any longer.

I'm gonna miss the lights!

Usually our tree and most of the house decorations come down when dh has off for Martin Luther King Day (how's that for a variation on liturgical timing). The Advent wreath serves as a centerpiece from Christmas day brunch (with the candles changed to white/ivory) until Candlemas. I can't stand to see it all leave - Christmas decorations, especially the tree, are just so beautiful. This year I'm planning to grow an amarylis (sp?) bulb on the hearth after the tree goes, so maybe that will cheer me and add a bit of beauty.
In our old home, the recycling guys came on Tuesday, so our outside Christmas wreath was always moved to the recycling bin on the day before Ash Wednesday -- so I totally get the idea of leaving things up until Lent.

Peace,
Nancy

A couple 17th century poems by Robert Herrick referring to the removal of greens.

CEREMONY UPON CANDLEMAS EVE

Down with the rosemary, and so
Down with the bays and misletoe;
Down with the holly, ivy, all
Wherewith ye dress'd the Christmas hall;
That so the superstitious find
No one least branch there left behind;
For look, how many leaves there be
Neglected there, maids, trust to me,
So many goblins you shall see.

CEREMONIES FOR CANDLEMAS EVE

Down with the rosemary and bays,
Down with the misletoe;
Instead of holly, now up-raise
The greener box, for show.

The holly hitherto did sway;
Let box now domineer,
Until the dancing Easter-day,
Or Easter's eve appear.

Then youthful box, which now hath grace
Your houses to renew,
Grown old, surrender must his place
Unto the crisped yew.

When yew is out, then birch comes in,
And many flowers beside,
Both of a fresh and fragrant kin,
To honour Whitsuntide.

Green rushes then, and sweetest bents,
With cooler oaken boughs,
Come in for comely ornaments,
To re-adorn the house.
Thus times do shift; each thing his turn does hold;
New things succeed, as former things grow old.

Well, Took ours down Saturday morning because - we got a 6th month old kitten Saturday afternoon! Been thinking of this for a while and we fell in love. I think the kitten would be disasterous for the tree!

Tonight! It is a crazy week, and in our teeny house, I'm not sure I want to live with it another full week, and I'm not anxious to take it down by myself, either.

We usually leave ours up until the day after the traditional feast of the Epiphany, Jan. 7th. This year I took it down Sun. because I have a little 20 month old with sticky fingers!!! I found all of my ornaments on the tree skirt, then my 5yr. old daughter tried to put them back on and the whole thing fell over! So, I said that was it and put it away. We do leave our Nativity out until Candlemas.

Tonight, maybe    Dh is out for the evening and I just came down from putting the kids to bed and found the tree toppled over! Not sure what happened so I'm leaving it until dh gets home. One of the glass ornaments on the top shattered as well--all over the couch. Yikes. I hope we can get it back up. The kids would be devastated to have it gone in the morning with no warning.

Thanks Mary for the poems!

we are a candlemas family as well, and this is just perfect for the removal of the decorations.
