Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

It is great timing that our family's study of World Geography and Cultures this school year coincides with the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and the Soccer World Cup in South Africa.

When I planned our year of geography, I have planned 2 weeks for a Winter Olympics detour in February. Although we are "traveling" to Africa in January we also have a Soccer World cup unit study planned for the summer(my husband and the boys have planned it)

I thought I would share my Winter Olympics plan outlines. (44 days to go!)We covered a lot about the Olympics when we did a Summer Olympics Unit Study 2 years ago, so our focus is a little different. It will be a great way to cheer up February - the kids are looking forward to watching the sports and also movies like Miracle which is one of our all time favorite family movies.

I'm glad you remembered curling!!!

My dd's Canadian friend plays this sport. It's quite interesting, once you get to know it a little. Very strategic.

Maybe someone has info on the physics of curling?

And once again Rebecca Dussault (who Marilyn mentioned above) is an Olympic hopeful - members of the Olympic cross country team will be determined in early January. I so hope she makes it. Her story is fantastic, she is an awesome witness to her Catholic faith, the vocation of motherhood, and homeschooling (she's a homeschooling mom this time around as her oldest is now school aged). For those who don't know who she is see our 2006 Winter Olympics thread where she was followed diligently.

We just happened to watch the movie Cool Runnings a few days ago and loved it! There is one off-color phrase, which unfortunately gets repeated a few times (a bad-a$$ mother) but other than that it has a lovely message of perseverance and teamwork.

It also got the kids interested in winter olympics (and how interesting that the setting was also a Canadian olympics).

thanks for all the books and links - this will be fun for Feb!

Marilyn,

We are also tying in our Around the World studies of North America and Canada with the Olympics! Can't wait! :)

Here are some links and ideas I have found.

*what about a Wii olympic games of our own?? or something like that -- the slalom (sp?) on the Wii is pretty funny, and shows the kids what the different sports are?

*Ami from HSS is working on a free lapbook to go with AB's unit study. I will be using that probably. I will look at the unit study written for Summer Olympics from 08 and at least touch on Olympic history a bit. THere are several components from this one that can be used again with these olympics.

Summer Olympics 08 lapbook

*verse in Hebrews for memorization and copy work -- throw off everything that entangles, run with endurance...

*we will learn a bit about some of the sports played in the winter olympics

*possibly Very Last First time? a FIAR title...lots of Canada links on this page on HSS

*animal study - beavers, moose

Enchanted Learning and ABCteach have some pages too...

DLTK canada resources

Kaboose Canada Day resources

Knowledge Quest free Canada unit

*Read Three Snow Bears, set in Canada, use a few lessons from this unit

Three Snow Bears unit/lapbook

Crayola canada pages

more canada resources

Canada Tour on youtube

I am interested in finding more resources for North America in general, as an overview for this continent??

I meant to add that as soon as Ami is done with the Winter Olympics lapbook I'll come back over to this thread and post it!

We're doing an Olympics unit too ... one thing that I'm really interested in is that Canada is pushing their aboriginal roots with symbols and images of the native tribes (Inuits and others) ... so we'll be adding them to our study ... primarily thru arts/crafts ...

And I'd be quite remiss if I didn't mention that I'm going to try and knit a Dale of Norway ski-team sweater -- they're the official suppliers and always have gorgeous (and expensive) sweaters made specially for the teams ... I'm going to make one!

Yes, Candace, my kids and I are negotiating for the Mario/Sonic at the Winter Olympic games ... it is such a great tie-in and the games are fun! I'm thinking we'll each choose a "country" and see how many awards we pick up in each event!

Thanks Candace for all the information and links. I really recommend the Amanda Bennett Unit Study - my 3 older children did it 4 years ago - they were 9 and 6 - and they LOVED it - their notebooks are still amongst their most treasured items.

I found that this link for the Vancouver games, which Marilyn posted above, also has a link at the top where you can see a map tracing the route of the Olympic flame across Canada. From about Day 40 on, there are also pictures. Maybe this could be useful for Canadian geography study.

I just heard that Rebecca Dussault did not make the US Olympic Cross Country Team this year...

Here's the best book I've found to use as a spine for our Winter Olympics unit: The Winter Olympics: An Insider's Guide to the Legends, Lore and the Games by Ron C. Judd. The writing is amazing and really makes you see the action. I wrote a more complete review on my blog.

Bumping to specifically ask,

Is your family enjoying the World Cup? Is it enriching your home education? How?

Love,

My ds is obsessed with the World Cup!    We watched the game between Slovenia and United States this morning. We aren't American but, boy oh boy, was that game tense.

I haven't done anything formal with this but my ds loves sports and geography so he carries things out on his own. Our Scholastic Atlas is his best friend. When a team is playing that we are not familiar with, he looks it up and reads all about it. That is the extent of it.   But my ds has learned a great deal about geography through sports.

I have the Russia pages from Notebooking Pages. We will do a Russia country study. I am compiling a list of Russia picture books and fiction for ages 4 to 10.

I would love any ideas you have...
