My 2yo Anna Mary suffers from a slew of food allergies. She had been doing very well, but now seems to have developed a goiter most likely due to an iodine deficiency. I have to juggle so much with her diet and sadly I dropped the ball and missed this important nutrient. We are in the process of getting all the blood work back to tell the whole story, but her doctor fully believes that she will be found to have hypothyroidism. I need to start giving her iodized salt in order to get her iodine levels up (which we still need to check, I need to try and get a urine sample from her). I worry about her reacting to the iodized salt (because of the anti caking junk they put in), but for now I pray that she handles it. Once her thyroid levels come back she will likely be put on thyroid meds until her iodine gets back up. Hopefully her body can tolerate all this and that our dr's initial diagnosis is correct. I also hope that her goiter shrinks. It isn't huge, but it is noticeable and a constant reminder of how I failed my little girl
Please pray for our little Anna Mary. It just breaks my heart to see her suffering like this. She obviously is not feeling well. She has become withdrawn when out in public or when people come over, she eats very little, and she has become so sensitive to every little thing that upsets her. She is not her usual lively, crazy self. I am so sad for her. Please beg our lady and her mother (my little girl's patron saints) to intercede for my precious little girl.
Thank you

OH, Beth.....God love you, please don't beat yourself up.....as one mama to another, managing food allergies is HARD!!! I have told many parents that I have had two children with tracheostomies...and g-tubes....and multiple surgeries....but managing food allergies is EVERY BIT as hard as these medically fragile kids....every single bit. It is emotionally draining to worry about something that seems so...normal---eating!! I have fed my guys a few things they were allergic to, accidentally, I cried and cried!! I felt AWFUL.....I was just telling my little ds today, that he needs more calcium, he is not getting the nutrients he needs, I KNOW that....but we are getting retested in a few weeks, because his food allergies seem to be more numerous, now. It is overwhelming.
In the end, you don't know if it is TRULY the food choices you made for her, she might have been at high risk for this anyway......she already has immune issues as it is, and thyroid issues run right along side the immune stuff.
I am praying on this Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, that your precious daughter is healed...and you can move on and continue being the terrific mama that you are, without berating yourself anymore. I am also asking St. Ann....that is one of Lily's middle names, to intercede as well.
Keep the Faith, Sister!!!

Praying for your daughter and for you.
You are doing a wonderful job as a mother. Lots of people are iodine deficient and they don't even know it! Keeping your dear daughter in my daily prayers.

Thank you all for the prayers. We have a confirmed diagnosis of hypothyroidism. She started on the meds yesterday. We will be going down to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia this week to meet with an endocrinologist. We are still waiting for the thyroid antibodies test to come back. That would tell us if we are dealing with an autoimmune disorder. Today I drop off a urine sample at the lab to check her iodine level.
Saturday afternoon I started giving her iodized salt in her water. That evening dh and I already thought we saw a slight improvement in her. Each day now I am giving her her RDA of iodine via the salt in her water along with using the iodized salt on her food. Yesterday we were out with some friends and she seemed a bit perkier than she had been last week, even talking and playing with children and adults she did not know.
Thanks again for all your prayers

Beth,
I'll pray that through the medical community and your own maternal instincts and perseverance, you'll be able to find workable solutions for little Anna Mary! I can imagine it must be very difficult for you! I'm sending and prayers for you as well! You're a wonderful mama! You surely didn't fail your precious dd! You've had so many things to tend to in regards to her diet!!! Many, many , Beth!
I'm going directly to Our Lady and dear St. Anne for you and your dd! May they guide this situation to healing and all peace for both you and Anna Mary!

Praying for Anna Mary, Beth, especially as I believe she and my 2-year-old "met" while both were in the womb?
I'll add her to the prayers I help little Declan say, too.

Oh My goodness, I am so glad you were able to catch this. Hypothyroidism can be scary if untreated. Prayers for her recovery.

Beth, I've been praying for you since you posted. Please do be gentle with yourself - you are a thoughtful, hard working, and sensitive mother. A dear friend here reminded me recently of Mother Theresa's words, "We are called upon not to be successful, but to be faithful." I have found great comfort in these words and hope that you do too.
I'm praying for your sweet Anna Mary and her health...and I'm praying for you .
(A practical tip for consideration: ask Mary Ann R. to make you some of her spiked fruitcake - perfect for cheering a mother .)
Love,
