Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The 'honeymoon' rules to the various Mayfair crayon rail games :-)

Unfortunately we haven't had much time without children since my husband started working the 3 to midnight shift. When we do find time we often have other plans

We play a ridiculous amount of Canasta together now that I've been banned from playing Nertz with him "for winning way too much", lol. Canasta is definitely his game. ;)

So while I'm recommending expensive German board games ....
So, what's up with "German Board Games?" Are Germans known for Board Games too? Sort of like they are known for beer, cars, cuckoo clocks and sausage?    Are they are certain "type" of game? Nevermind....I just answered my own question.....

I just looked this up on Wikipedia.

**have themes (are not abstract, but ABOUT something)
**made for everyone
**no player elimination
**for an international audience (de-emphasizing verbal communication)....MY KIND OF GAME!!!!!
**innovative "game mechanics"
**German game designers are "featured" and are sort of "famous" (they are sometimes called "designer games" for this reason.)

Hummph. Interesting. I had no idea.

Let's see....what else can I look up while I'm stuck in the mountains with a finger-sucking-19-month-old

We've played backgammon since we were newlyweds. We throw in scrabble and dominoes, just to change it up. We are known to be rather competitive with our backgammon.

This has been so interesting to read b/c my dh and I were just talking about what we can do rather than watch movies. Our parish priest is a game buff and we've played Settlers of Catan with him. Some of these "German" games look so interesting. The problem is that I'm not a good loser - but I'm not really a good winner, either. cooperative games look like they'd be better for me...but there's not too many for just 2-players.

We used to do jigsaw puzzles but had too many incidents with the kids getting into them...so we're back to computer games. We resurrected an old computer to re-play Myst and Riven while we wait for Christmas for our present to us: Myst III - Exile / Myst IV - Revelation. These are puzzle games that we can solve together; so we both win. (We've also had fun solving / playing computer games like "The Incredible Machine")

Then a couples game like THIS ONE would be perfect!

Bumping for Christmas.....

We played Othello a lot last winter and liked it.

And, I did end up getting Lost Cities last year for Christmas and WE LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!! I highly recommend it for a 2-player-game.

I'm thinking about Jambo this year....but might wait for dh's birthday.

Anyone played HIVE? It's listed on FunAgain Games "Current Bestsellers."

Mancala is SO RELAXING, isn't it? I love it! There must be something about the slight CLICK of those beads!

We like Hive - it makes you think, is fun, and there's something really satisfying about handling the game pieces. Go for it!

Bumping for Christmas purposes and to see if anyone has any other favorite games they play with dh.

Lost Cities is still a favorite. Along with Rack-O and Rummikub.

Jambo and HIVE are still on my wishlist. And, thinking about Pentago.

Cribbage here! We're even recording winnings on the back of the board, for family posterity! Games take less than half an hour and we usually play before family prayer time ~ very important since dh puts in long hours and is usually tired! Our nightly games have been a nice way of connecting and we both really look forward to them!
