Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm missing something. Coins, I understand. Candy cane, I get. But what's with the clementines?

Oranges are a sweet fruit which keep well making them a traditional stocking stuffer (along with apples).

Also they can stand in for three gold balls (in some versions of the story of the impoverished girls St. Nick rolled gold balls into the house to pay the doweries).

We only started celebrating St Nicholas' Feast Day three years ago.
Don't know how it's going to go tomorrow as we have three of the boys' friends staying tonight and they are not Catholic.

Oh, please don't, Laura!

Earlier I had wrote a post with a to you because I *really* wish I hadn't gone overboard these past 3yrs we've been celebrating.   I should have gone a bit simpler.

Laura,

We do put a little more in the shoes on St. Nick's feast day because we don't put anything in the stockings at Christmas except the one thing they receive from St. Nick. So the whole "stocking stuffer" thing that most families do happens here on December 6th. Their stockings are like his little hiding place for that one special thing he brings them. I think my kids just assume he can't be bothered to wrap so he hides his gifts. And he must have a thing for shoes and socks!

It was my husband's family tradition to celebrate the day anyway and since I didn't know anything about it, this is what it morphed into for us.

I sometimes feel like the "bad mom" when I see pictures of stockings filled to overflowing but then I remind myself that that isn't our tradition.

BTW...the Target dollar section has some really cute pairs of Christmas socks and gloves if anyone is still looking for ideas.

DH and I just got back from shopping for the stockings this year.

Some of this year's finds:

white t-shirt for 18-yo dd, for culinary school whites
Skittles and sour skittles
playing cards
bubble tape
Lindt dark chocolates for 18-yo dd
Ballerina and Singoalla biscuits
nail clippers
lip balm
travel size hand sanitizers
toothbrush case for traveling/camping for 13-yo ds
small bottle Scope for camping/traveling for 13-yo ds
toothpaste
tights for 7-yo dd
chocolate gold coins
Onesies for the baby
baby toothbrush for baby
yarn and crochet hook for 7-yo dd

last year they got root beer (in the teeny cans), fancy post-its, booklights, Vienna sausages and a Christmas ornament -- i wanted to do ornaments again this year but we didn't have time to go to Michaels (Meijer doesn't have as nice a selection for the price point we wanted)

and that's it. Funny- they get the same thing every year, and yet every year they get sooooo excited for it. :)

I love the new toothbrush idea. I will have to remember it for next year. We have the chocolate coins, we combine chocolate & orange together in these (except Target has them for $2.99 a piece. My kids are also getting a Veggie Tales movie.

I am so glad I read this thread because I am on my way back back out..... (I love the small boxes of cereal and the pencils and crayons idea too.) You see, I went shopping last night and got the gold coins (well, so I thought , but when I got home they were NOT in my bags. Then I realized what had happened : I had mumbled quietly to the cashier to please bag the coins separately(as one of my ds was with me). She must have thought I had asked her to please put the coins back. I did notice she put them under the register for a minute, but silly me, I thought she had realized that I did not want my ds to see. Now I will have cereal for one shoe and coins for the other and maybe even pencils, colored pencils and crayons. So I guess I can say we will have:
Gold coins
Small JUNK cereal
crayons
pencils
colored pencils

We had in our stockings
Candy coins
Small candy cane
Holy card of St Nick

We had our annual breakfast feast table which was decorated with Fruit, assorted nuts, candy canes, and cookies (Lebkucken(sp), German Spice cakes, gingerbread men)
Statue of St Nick, red candles, my Christmas table cloth however didnot get a chance to put any charcoal pieces on the table this year. It was noticed by my dd
Then in the evening we had a friend of ours from church who dresses up as St Nick for parties and such He came over for the evening. It was fun. Ireally enjoy doing St Nick Day for my kids Oh yeah I forgot to mention we also got a little box together for a nieghbor child with some of the same items in honor of St Nick.

Thank you all for the inspiration!

I went with those cheap parachute guys you can buy in the party section. They love to throw them down the stairs or out the 2nd story window. Punching balloons, pencils and a rubber bouncing ball.
