Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Most of the time they are not particularly creative. I usually get something like 3 Hail Marys...one priest asked me what my favorite prayer was and said to say that in front of the Blessed Sacrament. My husband confessed having problems getting along with one of our children recently and the priest told him to consecrate all of our children to the Blessed Mother. Usually it's the 3 Hail Marys though.

I've had some different forms of penance though each priest tends toward a certain format: a bible passage to reflect on, prayers to say, etc. A few of these have been powerfully connected to my confession, most not so much.

Amanda, it seems like your priest is confusing the act of contrition (I'm sorry God, I won't do it again) with acts of penance, which help us to heal the places where sin has hurt us, for example in a relationship or habit. Maybe he just feels like it's really important to focus on contrition as we seek to avoid future sin.

If you pray about it and feel like you need more guidance in this area, then you'd be in your rights to tell the priest during confession. Maybe something like: “Father I've been struggling with the sin of x. Please give me some suggestions of prayers for dealing with x. Some examples of times when I've committed x are...”

Thanks to everyone whose brought your confession experiences here. This isn't easy ;)

Blessings,
Karen

We are blessed with two really good priests at our parish. One is fond of giving Bible passages as penance. He's also asked for prayers for the Pope when the Holy Father was traveling. The other one is really good at giving counsel--saying an "Our Father" if you take the Lord's name in vain and penances that might make amends depending on your sins.

Most of the time I get a certain number of Hail Mary's (1-3 usually) but I once had a priest who sent me out to read the Book of John! I sat right down and read it there in the church.

I just pretend that the priest doesn't know who I am. I keep the curtain pulled over the screen, although you can open it if you wish, or have a face to face confession if you prefer. I feel more focussed on God when the priest is "less there" iykwim. I mean, he does as he has walked past me sitting outside the confessional box, and the last priest who did confessions used to show in what he said that he knew me and had heard all these sins confessed once too often! But he has retired due to ill health, and I will have to get used to a new priest. Penances are to say x number of Hail Marys or Our Fathers usually. Or to just spend time with the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. One priest always asks us to say a prayer for him too, which I really like - he is a lovely man.
