Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

It's evident that different members have different ways of reading the message board and I'm curious about how/why some topics aren't seen that seem like they would be of interest to a larger number of people. Having a perspective of reading habits would be helpful to the moderators and managers.

I always go to "Active Topics" and open that. Then I can see all the titles of of threads that have been started or have additional posts since last time I read. I look for thread titles that look like my cup of tea. I often find myself then reading in a forum room I might not have visited otherwise, but I'm so glad I did.

Also I read more in the education half of the boards because that is the essence of our home education and why I joined originally. So I read that more than the Home as Haven bottom half.

What are you interested in and how do you find it?

I just go to active topics. Sometimes, I will set the time further back in case I missed some things I wanted to read. So, even if I had gotten on in the morning, when I get back on after lunch, I will click active topics for the last 16 hours, or whatever.

Of course, I have to admit that I was on 4Real a LONG time before I figured out what the active topics link did! I guess I just never really noticed it. What a great tool!

Welllll....I never knew about the Active topics page now that I know I'm going to try that out!

What I do is click the forums of interest that I like to read. At the time as I'm expecting our first baby I mainly read (and only post in) the homes as haven forums. I do read a few of the educational ones occasionally but since I'm not homeschooling at the moment (and haven't even got a baby "outside" yet!) I don't post there as I feel I have nothing to offer yet.

Oh...you (and all your peers clever enough to come here, knowing you have an interest in home educating) have 2 things that are very important; questions and life experience. Please share!

An active member for 2 1/2 years and I learned about the ACTIVE TOPIC button about 2 minutes ago!!
That is a real handy feature...

I generally peruse all the new topics and especially love when something new is in the Picture book and Literature topics because it means I will discover new great books!!

The first thing I see are Active Topics as soon as I come to the board. I go through everything, but I gravitate towards more education-inspired posts.

I always click on the active topics button and like Molly sometimes turn the time back to check topics I didn't get to read.

I go through all the active topics but love... all of them. I absolutely love this board.

Well, I subscribe to all forums here and read through emails. I never check active topics. Rather, if an email comes through that I want to respond to, I save it in my inbox and when I have time to be online I click through.    Crazy, I know. I'm a fast skim reader, and a fast deleter as well. In the end, after all these years, as ridiculous as this method sounds, it works the best for me.

Though I read all over the boards and learn so much, my is in the top half of the board. This board, and the experiences and collective wisdom here are unique in the way they foster and nurture learning and education through living books and experiences. I enjoy seeing the variety of ways other families exercise their talents and gifts in living this vocation, and I enjoy learning from all of you! In the sharing here, I have found I grow and am challenged in good ways. This is a very generous board and I'm grateful to be a part of it. I also greatly enjoy sharing here, it is a blessing to be able to do so.

I've always just gone to the Active Topics and then read those. If I find myself getting taken to other links, sometimes I'll follow a rabbit trail, and find goodies I'd wish I'd read up on in the past, but didn't discover. That is always wonderful. I try to limit myself to a certain number that I read at once, or I'd be reading these threads all day!

I am so surprised by the results. I have barely noticed the active topics link up there. I go to the main page, and visit individual forums. Almost always check We Pray to the Lord, the forum now known as Tea and Conversation, and the Mothering Forum when I visit unless I run out of time. Of course I don't read all the topics. Next most frequently checked is Domestic Church. Our Lady of Good Remedy & Care and Real Learning are the only other ones fairly regularly visited, and the rest when I have something related on my mind or am just looking for something else to read

I use active topics.. but I have noticed that something posted close to when my new time switches.. can get lost in between times.. I also will adjust the time for a bit of overlap to check that I didn't miss something.. but it's possible that some posts are missed because of using Active Topics.

I use active topics but have been meaning to find a "home" (in Tea and Conversation, perhaps?) where I will post frequently and try to make some new close (as close as the internet will allow us to be) friends.

I am glad to know I am not the only one who missed the active topics tab for so long!

Definitely an Active Topics reader. I read all of the subject lines and from that pick and choose which to explore in more detail. Sometimes it's educational and other times Home as Haven. Even though I don't have young children, I'm a real fan of picture books!

Peace,
Nancy

Me too! You're never too old for good picture books...

For those of you who weren't aware of the Active topics feature, I do encourage you to try it. When you click on the "Active Topics" button you'll see a drop down window which several have mentioned. You can then change the time frame you are searching for. If I've been reading for awhile, I often change that at the end to check for topics that might have come up new during the time I was reading and missed because I'd already scrolled through that section. Pick last hour, or 15 minutes, or how ever long I've been reading. Helps me not miss topics that would be in areas I already read through.
