Do you have one you can recommend?

I refused to buy my boy scouts' flavored popcorns because they have too many ingredients that are either bad for them (allergies) or bad for us (healthwise). I told them I'd get a popcorn popper instead, and bought the plain popcorn. I want to make kettle corn, and I've done that before just in a regular saucepan, with mixed results. I'm hoping a popper will streamline the process.

Any suggestions?

oh I don't have one but I have serveral friends that rave about the one with the handle on the top that you turn while it's popping.. hmmm let me think.. I think Lehman's has one..

All we've ever used is a regular stockpot and lid. I didn't know you could buy a stovetop popcorn popper!

We have a stainless steel one and we love it. It makes great kettle corn, it distributes whatever flavoring you use very well and makes the popcorn so tender. I can't stand microwave popcorn anymore.

do all these stovetop ones require oil? We have just started popping our own again as opposed to microwave. (Wow, what a difference!) But we are using so much oil that I was looking at getting an air popper.

Wow! That is a lot of oil:popcorn.

We use a couple tablespoons of smart balance with 1 tablespoon coconut oil. Mmmmm great flavor.

We use a big stainless steel popcorn boil and cook our popcorn right in the bowl (most people would not do this--we got this idea from Alton Brown). We cover the bowl with aluminum foil.

Also, if you grind up kosher salt in a food processor...it makes a lovely "popcorn salt" that adheres better to the kernels. Tasty.

No microwave popcorn here. We dropped that several years ago.

If you get one of the ones from Lehman's--check and make sure it isn't one with plastic gears. THey break. I know from personal experience. And no, they can't be fixed. Go for ones with the steel/metal gears. They hold up much better.

Oh--and always wash it by hand, never in the dishwasher.

Would these stove top poppers hold up to multiple batches or would they over heat? We usually make 3-4 batches at a time in a large copper bottomed pan (these boys LIKE popcorn ).

We just use the cast iron skillet or dutch oven, depending on how much we want. They are well seasoned so it only takes a film of oil.

We always used a wok on the boat to pop popcorn, I cannot believe it was 3 years ago that we were feeding burnt popcorn to the dolphins! Where does time go?

Alton Brown has a great episode on popcorn that we caught in a hotel last year. He uses a metal mixing bowl! (I use a tall stock pot).
