I need stocking stuffer ideas (besides food  ) for a 16 yr old boy...you know, the kinds of things that are *very* inexpensive?
Also, we always do a gift for each child for St. Nicholas Day that is usually around $15, no more than $20 if I'm absolutely stumped, and is always a religious item of some sort. Past gifts have included a holy water font, Sewing with Saint Anne or Tea and Cake with the Saints, Catholic T shirts, Veggie Tales dvds, neat Catholic crafts like rosary kits...stuff like that. The same 16 yr old ds already has a stash of t shirts. Last year's St. Nick day gift was a cool Holy Spirit mug with monastery produced coffee beans. I'm stumped for this year.
Any ideas?

I would look to funny things for the stocking stuffers.. maybe things that are handy for school work? umm white out? a mini stapler? things like that. How about a juggling kit? Those metal puzzles that you have to manipulate to seperate them or take a ring off or something like that. A deck of cards?

I saw some really neat pocket knives and multi tools at Costco this past week that were nice but fairly inexpensive. How about a gas card (does he drive?)? Or an itunes gift card?

Another vote for multitools! You could also start him on a basic tool box - tape measure, pliers, screwdrivers, etc. - Craftsman tools (Sears) are good quality and not too expensive. This is a gift that lasts forever.
Headlamps are very handy, too.
Film? Memory sticks? Batteries? Baseball cap w/religious theme?

Multitools are out. He is in training for the next two years to be a contractor, so *expensive tools* are a huge part of his life and he has all the other ones already. He was a scout for years and has a ridiculous stash of pocket knives.  We did the metal puzzles thing for several years when he was 10-12ish. You see my dilemma??? He is so hard to buy for!
Pencils etc, and a deck of cards. Those will work.  Thank you! I'm also adding in foods he can stash in his backpack that we normally wouldn't buy, and guitar picks. My plan for funny is to find a Shaun the Sheep figurine (its an extension of Wallace and Gromit...a short that is hysterical) to stick out of the top of the stocking. I only need maybe one or two more ideas for a stocking and then something for St. Nicholas Day???

handkerkiefs? socks! maybe more of a sock slipper or a fleece sock or something fun. what about a catholic book? maybe on St. Joseph since he's also a wood worker  or a medal of St. Joseph to wear..
eta - what about a knife sharpener to go with all those pocket knives?

Oh! A St. Joseph medal is a great idea! If I get a nice one on a manly looking chain, that would be a perfect St. Nicholas gift. Thank you!

Also for St. Nicholas how about a Christian Rock CD? DC Talk is probably popular with boys, my dd really loves, but so do her brothers now, Superchick (it's not all girls ) or Casting Crowns (they remind me of a Nickelback sound).

I was going to suggest a CD, too. Third Day, Big Daddy Weave, Phil Stacey, Jars of Clay and Mercy Me are some of older ds's favorites.
If you don't find a medal, perhaps a saint keychain.
How about a Catholic baseball cap? The companies that sell t-shirts sometimes carry them.

what sort of gun is he wanting? is it wanting his own? even though he has one he can use? or you don't want any in the house at all or?
Might have some ideas related to it if it's just that you can't afford a gun as a Christmas gift.

Some good stuff that has shown up in ds stockings in the past: carabiners,travel binoculars, sig bottle, woodcarving set, cool fossils, small pelican cases,compass, laser pointer, flint and steel, magnesium firestarter,"hotties" (hand warmers), glow sticks, mini maglight, nice drawing pencils.

Well, at this point, I don't even know. We definitely can't afford one. But he is 18, doesn't live here so it isn't so much a matter of guns in the house, and ships off to boot camp in a few months. Our main objection is that he is careless and a hot head. It is a status thing to him, which makes me worry about how responsible he will be with it. If he said, "Mom, I really want a gun so I can start hunting.", I might consider it.
This kid is just too hung up on cool. His idea of manhood is being a Marine, driving a lifted truck with a gun hanging in the back window, and having more tattoos then the other really tough guys. I am still trying to figure out how I ended up with a kid like this.
And you know the sad thing, if the next two kids were to ask for a gun to hunt or learn to shoot at a range, we would consider buying them one. My oldest just doesn't get the correlation between behavior and privileges.

ah.. then you definately don't want gifts in that direction unless it's education.. know of any good gun magazines that might emphasize careful and cautious?

Molly, if he's shipping off to boot camp soon, get him Marine stuff - stickers for the truck, t-shirts, key chains... Marine's appear obsessive about Marine stuff, all patriotic stuff actually. I had to pick thru the garbage with a Marine one day to pull out all the little paper USA flags that had been in cupcakes so he could burn them. So if you can't find strictly Marine stuff nearby, patriotic might be an easier way to go.
I even saw Marine Mardi Gras beads the other day just like these.
What about a medal of St Michael and the Marine Corp?
