I would never want a gun in our home but my husband *has* considered it (although we never have given it a minute of discussion)---it is just not a practical concern of ours. Of course, it is a right and I support those who do.
I would never have encouraged it in my boys but you know what? They gravitate toward it. They just make anything into a gun----if there isn't a stick or a zucchini, there's their fingers.
My boys began being invited to airsoft and paint-type gun wars when they got to their teen years and they LOVED it and begged us for their own (play) guns (well, one of my sons, did, really----the other just wanted to play). I started seeing the merit it in in terms of fostering healthy testosterone-instinctive/masculine-development and innocent active outdoor play (as opposed to sitting and playing an X-Box, or something).
In many ways, we mothers learn from our boys as we go along.....right? And since I saw it coming to them so intrinsically, it opened my eyes to considering God building it into them to want/need to explore "defending" and "pursuing" in terms of natural character development.

Interesting thread.
Dh and children have taken the hunter safety course, WOW, that is a great course! Now I want a rifle too! I want to be Victoria Barkley
DD age 13 wants a shotgun of her own, as dh takes them on Youth hunting only weekends, and all her friends have ALREADY (eyes rolling, hers not mine) bagged their first deer. My problem is guns are so expensive Any hunter families have advice how to buy them a lower prices?

We are thinking of Airsoft guns for Christmas this year.
A friend of mine told me a great way of looking at boys who do "gun play" or any weapon play for that matter. They are simply "practicing" their courage. Girls are nurturers...hence the babydolls, house, etc. Are boys "killers"...no they are using this play to test that courage, to imagine that courage and bravery. They aren't bloodthirsty is what she was trying to get through to me. And she felt letting them have an outlet for it wasn't going to necessarily make them insensitive to real-life violence (this is wear the video gaming messes things up I suppose?).
I have another friend who has 7 boys and hers don't just go outside shooting at each other, they create WWII and WWI. Her backyard has gone through various stages of trench and dune making.
Just some random thoughts.

My husband says pawn shops are good to check and sporting/outdoor shops usually have a fairly nice used section. He's been watching for a Remington 11-87 20 gauge youth shotgun for some time now and says that the classified ads consistently offer a few each week...none at the price he's watching for yet...but it's a good place to watch. Rob has also been checking regularly with our local gun store. They offer used weapons and he's developed a good relationship with the owner. The owner will now call Rob if something **possible** comes in the shop. Craigslist occasionally has something as well. Estate sales listed in the newspaper would be a source to watch. You might also check shooting ranges - sometimes they have a bulletin board of weapons for sale, and just checking with the rangemaster would probably yield some information or at least you could leave a note on the bulletin board noting what you're looking for. It gets the word out.
Ok... ...ducking behind our big gun safe now!

A question to airgun users: Is there any risk of those little pellets entering ears? Do you kids use ear protection?

Hmmmm...never thought of that one. My oldest son was introduced to air guns by a good friend's sons. I loved their rules so we've adopted them...
:: eye protection at all times
:: no shooting/aiming above the belt
:: if a little fella happens to wander close to the shooting zone - cease fire whilst older brother escorts to the safe area.
:: no close range shooting
We've never had a pellet in the ear, but I'd be interested to hear if others had. I suppose it is not outside the realm of possibility. I'd be leary of requiring ear plugs because it would impede the ability to hear others which would be more of a safety issue for me.
