About the candle...I have a pretty white pillar candle that sits atop of a glass vase that can be filled with decorative items. |

If you don't have specific items in mind and just want to add color without a lot of cost.. look for cellophane in colors and then you crinkle it up and stuff it in.

I would probably do dried wildflowers and maybe some fall leaves and nuts or winter evergreens or holly for the vase.

I was reminded of this again recently when I was making the 2010 calendar and realized that Dec. 12th falls on a Sunday that year and Our Lady of Guadalupe gives way to the 3rd Sunday of Advent. I LOVE Our Lady of Guadalupe but we won't be celebrating her feast on Dec. 12th in 2010 because that is the 3rd Sun. of Advent. |

I am bumping this up because I came across this today in the USCCB Liturgical Calendar:
Quote:
In 2010, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, December 12, falls on the Third Sunday of Advent. This feast may be observed on December 11 or 13 with the permission of the diocesan bishop. On December 12, the Third Sunday of Advent, Our Lady of Guadalupe may be appropriately honored in one or more of the petitions of the Prayer of the Faithful, in the homily, and perhaps in one of the hymns during the liturgy. The readings and the Mass formulary for December 12 are those for the Third Sunday of Advent. |

Just an FYI.

Several years ago I asked permission and got it --though never did do it-- to bring home fire from the Easter vigil paschal candle to light our Easter candle. I'm going to check again with Father to see if it's still OK and if so we'll use a tall glass votive that burned down at least halfway for safely transporting the fire home (it's less than a five minute drive from our church to home).
We'll light the candle when we get home, say a few prayers and go to bed. We'll blow it out of course but wouldn't it lovely to keep the votive lit all through Easter if possible? Hmm . . . I'm just thinking out loud here. |

I did it --I brought blessed fire home, and it's still lit! Fr. suggested it would be "very cool" if we could keep it lit all year (for feast days, holidays and birthdays --the Christ candle on Sundays) and we're going to try. It's currently in a clear 7 day sanctuary lamp candle. It's pretty cool seeing that constant flicker and knowing it is the blessed fire from the Easter Vigil.

Very cool!
Somewhat related, when we decorated the Church for Easter, Father gave us the old Easter candle from last year. Much more manageable in size for our home than a new one would be . Now we just need a holder. I think that dh is going to use his drill press to put a 2 inch hole in a heavy block of wood. It is a lot of candle!

Thursday Favorite Bump!
This topic helped me to clarify and make strong a philosophy for how our family approaches Sunday. Plus, it gave me the details to make it all happen.
Favorite take-away? I've managed to make a special Sunday meal every weekend since! I give myself the "sundown Saturday through sundown Sunday" window :) Beautiful!
Love,

I love this thread, also. I refer to it often... We have tried to live more intentionally all day on Sunday. We prepare the night before for Mass for clothes and discussion of feasts and/or readings.
Breakfast and dinner are always special. The latter is usually with extended family.

We make a real priority of Sundays here too. A few ideas that work for us:
:: I set out church clothes and pack for Mass the day before. This is partly practical (we go to an early Mass) and partly spiritual (I want to observe the Sunday rest as fully as I can).
:: Speaking of Sunday rest, we absolutely refrain from all unnecessary work on Sundays. I used to run errands or handle household projects on Sundays, but at my husband's insistence when we were first married, I stopped all of that. And I must say it is *so* nice to actually have that day of rest, set apart from the rest of the week! It is so easy to let Sunday be a catch-all day for finishing weekend tasks otherwise.
:: My husband has a demanding job and it is difficult for him to keep from being "on call" for a whole day, but he makes it a priority and everyone at work knows it. So it's nice to know that he's unplugged from work as well (unless an emergency arises). I know not all husbands can avoid working on Sundays, so I'm thankful he can. It really sets the tone for the day.
:: Special meals! We do a treat with breakfast when we get home and a nice dinner that doesn't require too much work for me.
:: I try to save special games, toys, or entertainments for Sundays. A favorite book I've been wanting to read, a movie for when the kids go to bed, a new puzzle for the kids to play, a toy that doesn't come out that often. It's nice for the day to feel like a celebration.
:: We prepare for Mass the week before: we read the gospel, they learn the appropriate hymns, etc. I also encourage my older children to say extra prayers on the way to Mass to prepare themselves for Holy Communion now that they are communicants. :)
