We were audited for our 2007 tax returns as well - it was the year we added a dependent (a foster child) and went from 4 to 5 dependents. I wonder if there is a connection.
I agree with the post discussing the problems with claiming dependents. It is not only on tax returns. Our health insurer requires us to submit a birth certificate/adoption documentation for our adopted children. I asked the company why and they said it was very common for people to try and claim nieces, nephews, and other family members as dependents in an effort to have those children covered. As a result, they require documentation that the employee is the parent or legal guardian of the children for whom coverage is being requested.

I had a friend who has 8dc audited last year. They had to prove that all of the dc were their own She was lead to believe that it was because of the family size.
We keep getting audited by the company our dh works for. They audit every time another child is added to our health insurance
I think that we will continue to have these problems and I won't be surprised if we someday get audited by the IRS

I don't understand why the IRS can't just check the SS#s for the children. Is it so hard to verify? Why make the family come down and go through this? All this and we have tax cheats in the major departments of the government.

We got audited for 2007, and it was an issue with the children. Not the number of children, but because someone else had claimed one of the children on their 2007 return. The IRS caught it because the same ss# was used on both returns, and we had to prove we were legally able to claim that child on our taxes.

Wow Paula, that is a scary thought. This past year I became a victim of identity theft because someone stole my SS#. I have no earthly idea how being that I am VERY particular about not giving this information out, not even to doctor's or dentist offices...
Anyhow I wonder if that is what has happened to us? How in the world would anyone get our child's SS#??? Our appointment is next week so I will definitely post and let everyone know what happened.

Leslie, let me just add that the person who claimed the other child was not a stranger.

Well we had our meeting yesterday with the IRS and it went very well... basically they couldn't understand how we were raising 6 children on just my husband's income. I wanted to do the FRUGAL cheer leading dance and spell out the word but restrained the urge
The lady was fairly new and quite nice so after showing her our family picture she laughed and said there was no doubt they were all ours . We took a copy all of their birth certificates, SS# and a some type of medical receipt. The only additional info they requested was a bank account and credit card numbers which we were able to retrieve off the internet so the appointment concluded after about 1.5 - 2 hours. Mostly because it took several tries to remember the passwords
So all in all PRAISE GOD it went really well and we are done.
