Doris, just remember that it is best to catch any cancer early. If you know you may have a history of this disease, seek counsel as your dr. suggested. I would think if he felt you had a problem now, he would have referred you to an oncologist (cancer specialist) as opposed to a geneticist. Seems like he's just being prudent and trying to have you tested for a potential problem, not that you have any cancer or anything like that now.
One thought that comes to mind is a trouble I had nursing one of my ds, an especially vigorous nurser. At the end of nursing, I would get a really sharp pain. Someone told me this was actually the tubes on the milk duct sort of "collapsing" or being pulled closed by the baby's intense nursing. If you are in pain near the end of feeding time, maybe this is the problem and you could shorten up the time on that side a little?

Update -- I've just got an appointment in the post. It makes me more anxious rather than less, as it's astonishingly quick -- Tuesday -- and it's for the 'Breast Surgery' clinic rather than the Genetics clinic. As I initially thought my fears about cancer were rather silly, this is all a bit of a shock... If anyone can spare another Ave, I'd be really grateful.

I'm praying, Elizabeth! I can understand your worry. These are the moments I find so challenging to "Be Still and Know..." I'm praying that Our Lord generously supplies you with His peace through these days of waiting!

I'm not sure about the time differences, Elizabeth...but it's Tuesday here and I wanted to let you know I'm praying for you today especially!

I'm interested to hear what happens as I have had similar problems...more so with my now 5yo...less so with my current nurser. I assumed my 5yo never had a very correct latch as it was always painful to nurse him. My current nurser nursed fine and without pain until recently, so I'm not sure what's going on, except that I'm now pregnant and maybe that has something to do with it,,,although it's only the one side that hurts!
Anyway, prayers for you on this appointment!

Thank you all so very much for your prayers and for remembering the appointment today. I'm really overwhelmed by your kindness.
All is well! I saw the consultant who had a good look and said something about a sebaceous gland/cyst (I don't quite remember as I was just in a state of happy relief when she said it wasn't cancer). Apparently this may be being irritated by the baby's saliva which is ?acidic (again, I couldn't really take it in).
Actually I had noticed the pain subsiding over the last few days and the sore place is definitely looking better (although still not quite normal).
Given my family history, the doc said that I should start having mammograms at 40 rather than 50 -- so that's also good preventative stuff (and not a given in the NHS!).
I thank God that all is well, for your prayers, and for the intercession of St Therese (to whom I prayed a very heavily-intentioned novena!).

YAY!!!! I've been SO worried, because my young cousin has inflammatory breast cancer, and as a Dr. herself, she didn't even catch it!
so happy and relieved for you!

Dear Elizabeth - so glad to hear your good news - I was praying for you though I could not post.
Continuing to pray for a full recovery.
(BTW - in the US I think they recommend all women start mammograms at age 40).
