I actually tried to make modelling beeswax for Easter one year - didn't really work. Kinda gooey and hard at the same time LOL! I have never used the authentic "store bought" modelling beeswax so I'm not sure how it was different.
It isn't hard to use crayons and beeswax though. Thanks for reminding me of this! You just melt it down in a pot. Perhaps line the pot with something (foil perhaps) as it is a bugger to get all the wax out. I wish I could find that recipe for the modeling clay. But I was suprised how easily the crayon and beeswax mixed with each other. It would be a fun project to do with kids actually. I think the trick with tapers is to have one long wick, hold it in the middle and dip the two sides into the pot with wax and have some place to dangle the dry wick part as it cools. Also, have lots of time to keep dipping it into the pot of hot wax til it is at the desired diameter.
About Saintly Soaps ~ she also runs CarmelSoaps too - you can see she has a lot of feedback in that store and knows what she is doing.
But definitely - making due with what you have is a wonderful lesson for children! How about a pinecone garland!!

Jen, I have very strong opinions on what my candles and wreath should look like. I don't like the honeycomb, either. Years ago my mother had some tapers that were ribbed, and hollow with a comb like structure inside. These were beeswax, and they were the best Advent wreath candles EVER! But I've never seen anything like them again.
Other personal requirements: It should be a ring, evergreen (fake), and hang over the dinner table.
Hmmm...that's just what my mother did...I'm detecting a pattern.

After posting earlier I remembered a project for votive candles that one of our dc did while preparing for First Confession. Glue small torn pieces of colored tissue paper to the outside of a votive candle holder, "paint" over the tissue paper with glue, then sprinkle with clear glitter for a lovely stained glass effect. Using varying shades of purple and pink/or rose paper, one could create a special one-of-a-kind Advent wreath set. This would also work well with Jodie's lovely idea of wine glasses for votive candles. We've also used jelly jars and various other glass containers for candles, so one could certainly use many things other than votive holders...small jars, juice glasses..even glass shades from old light fixtures with a platter or tray beneath them.
Jodie, I'm with you...we always keep candles out of reach, usually on a shelf or high cupboard when little ones are around. Fortunately, we have several spots in the house that are suitable for keeping candles up high and out of reach of little hands. In fact, a half wall with built-in bookshelves, between our lr and dining area(which I thought I couldn't stand before moving here), has become a central spot for prayertimes and serves as a family altar of sorts, with various prayer candles tucked here and there...I love how God knows just what we need, even when we think we have better ideas!
eta: I think we'll place the new Advent wreath right in the center of the family altar area, since it's visible from the dinner table...it will save moving the wreath back and forth.
One more thought, does anyone else use the longer BIC style lighters for lighting candles? They're especially nice when a wick is further down inside a taller pillar candle or for lighting luminaries (something we do at the gravesides of loved ones every Christmas).

THAT WAS FAST!!!!!!!! I have already had a response from Big Dipper Wax Works and it confirms Mary's original correspondence with them -- THEY PLAN ON OFFERING ADVENT CANDLES THIS YEAR!
We are actually planning on offering an advent candle pack on our retail website this year, because of the large amount of requests we have been getting. We will not be offering it to our wholesale customers this year, so the only place you will be able to find it is on our retail website, Big Dipper Wax Works. I’m not sure when we will have it available for sale, but if you sign up on the website to receive emails, I’m sure we will most likely do an email send out to let people know about it once it is available. Thanks again for the inquiry!! We have started several of our offerings due to customer request, so your input is really valued and appreciated!
I'm thrilled and thought I'd share with those of you that might be interested in signing up for emails from them!
and...

YES! In fact, we much prefer them! Last year was the first year we hung our Advent wreath above our table and we really liked it!!! It was suspended by velvet ribbons and getting to the tapers to light them was a reach. I like how you can reach in with the BIC lighter and place the flame right where you need it. And of course since it's usually a big kid doing that I feel better about that, too.

Hmmm...I just looked, Jen. Can you tell me where to sign up? I made an account, but I don't see anything else.
I hope they also offer violet/purple candles and rose colored alone.

I don't know how to do the linky thing, but here's a try at it..... CatholicSupply
They have battery operated advent candle tapers that I am thinking of ordering; with 3 boys under 5, real candles just make me so nervous, so maybe we would use them more?
They also have a really nice fabric Advent Calendar that I am eying

Hi Moms~
Last year, I put out an email to my local home school group asking if anyone wanted the 100% Beeswax Advent Candles. I had 6 takers!
When you buy in bulk like that, it dramatically reduces costs because you are getting a bulk price and splitting the shipping 6 ways...so what would have cost nearly $18 for Advent Candles cost about $10 per person.
You can also use the coupon code TJOOS for another small discount. Yippee!
Here is the store

I love Catholic Supply, they have wonderful customer service. : )
I bought our Advent wreath from them, it is the Journey to Bethlehem one. It was not the color I expected it to be. If I remember correctly it was an odd green hue. DH bought a can of pewter colored spray paint and it looks much better now. We always decorate the inside with a tall white candle and arrange greens from the Christmas tree around it. Candles make me nervous with little ones too. We usually just light the wreath for dinners on Sundays, Christmas Eve and Christmas day itself.

Woo Hoo! See, it pays to ask! Thanks for the update. I hadn't checked in awhile. They look really pretty and they are tall, too.

You can get 100% Beeswax Candles for a much better price at Beeswax Candleworks.
We have ordered from them for two years now. The only thing I would change is that the "rose" colored candle is a bit darker than I would like.
If you order "in bulk" with friends, etc...it's much cheaper.

The Big Dipper with shipping are expensive, but they are rather tall and I love the colors. I love your idea, Maggie. I found this great quote which might help convince other friends that the beeswax is worth it for a "Catholic" viewpoint:
Quote:
Mother must make a shopping expedition with her daughters; and what a job it is to find some violet ribbon, not too dark, not too gay, but just the right hue to express the longing of the Advent season. Then the candles must be obtained. Perhaps these could be sought at church, for blessed candles lend solemnity to the occasion and remind us of the pure beeswax which symbolizes the wholesome and pure body of the resurrected Saviour. Of course, we could buy several other things now, but it is so much more fun to make several trips to the stores. This way each succeeding feast of the season becomes a "special occasion." |

In order for the candles to be "true" blessed candles, don't they have to contain a certain percentage of beeswax? 80% comes to mind?
Anyone know?

Just an fyi here. I found boxed advent candles at Hobby Lobby, yesterday. They had boxed ones and separate tapers. I ended up buying the taller separate tapers, as we like to leave the candles lit longer, but don't want to change them out. Oh, and they were 50% off!

Liturgical candles were required to be beeswax "maxima parte" - "in the majority" - which is commonly taken as 51% - since it is at least over half. There is a lot of mystical symbolism associated with beeswax and beeswax was a cleaner burning and more desirable material. Current regulations in the GIRM do not specify material though. Then there are articles which say that yes, it is required. Even Fr. Z says he is "not sure if the percentage of real wax is laid down by law." I think it is confusing.

Illuminated Ink has a sale on their advent materials, including make-your-own beeswax advent candles which are $9.38. Sale price is through 11/14/10. I don't know what the shipping is, but here is the link.
