Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

FWIW, I think that Bridget gave some excellent advice. There are reasons that you married this man in the first place and it will be helpful to remember his finer points and compliment him on them. Having someone to help you rebuild the lines of communication between you two might help too. If you can't make it to the Retrouvaille coming up, then schedule the next one now. Maybe, if you explain to your MIL why you need a sitter at the last minute, she might be willing/able to change her plans for you and you can still make it to the one coming up sooner?

Still praying for you that things will work out well.

Oh Karen, I'm sorry. I agree with what others have said, beg, borrow, steal childcare, make the arrangements, and go. If he goes grugingly, so be it. If he needs this to be about you, then say, "This will help us communicate about what you need from me to make our marriage better." Whatever, just get him there to try it if at all possible.

I don't have any advice either but I will pray for these very difficult situations.
