Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well, thanks for the suggestion of using pens. It cut the time it took for ds (8) to write out spelling words and his hand wasn't even tired after 2 X the words he normally does! He was very happy - and so was I! Dh commented that that one suggestion was worth the hour I'd spent on this board .

Now, any left-handers have a preference. Seems the pens are a bit pickier with left-handed angle than the right handed one and we have a left-hander. So we're looking for a different pen for this dc.

The big thing for me and for Don--no righties are allowed to use our pens (I do have to use pens form time to time). They change the feel of the pen, those righties! Don never lets his right handed employees use his pen. The pens just don't work the same afterwards.

I have two leftie daughters here, so I really appreciate this info. Who knew?

Janet,
What are you going to get? I have a leftie here and I am thinking on switching him to pen to see if that makes it easier for him.
I was thinking on getting some gel pens. I have some and they seem to run very smoothly. Let me know what works for your leftie...

Years ago ds and I compromised to his use of eraseable pens.

Our leftie told us his favorite pen are the clear bic pens in blue ink. They run smoothly at various angles. I suspect gels would work well too but I want to restrict dc to black or blue ink because 1) readability for me and dc with the clear contrast to the white paper and 2)I have to copy sample work for our cover school and other colors don't always come out on our scanner.

I am going to use MacBeth's suggestion. Dh is now using a permanent marker to put names on each dc pen. This will help us know who is leaving them on the floors and will keep the right handers from using our one left handers pens.

Who ever dreamed that finding a pen for a left hander would be so much trouble. I've about scissors. Those scissors that are labeled for both left and right handed are worthless. My poor left hander couldn't cut at all until we went out and invested in true left-handed scissors at a sewing store. An adult left-hander (our ds vision therapist) showed me how the way the two blades are connected is what is important - otherwise ds couldn't see what he was cutting. What a difference that one little piece helped. But who would have ever dreamed that pens could be different!

Oh I love this topic!
Personally, I have always loved Papermate blue stick pens for myself, but I'm moving toward the exclusive use of ultra fine Sharpies (I am a Sharpie junky-have them in a million colors and all different sizes and always looking for more).
As for ds (10):Pencils are for math-no mechanical ones because they are constantly snapping off and giving him something else to play with and get distracted by.Everything else he does on the computer. It speeds up the writing process so much and I find he is willing to write SO much more if he can type it.
And for dd (4) I find washable markers are the easiest thing for her to use to trace letters and such. They seem to flow much more smoothly for her than crayons or pencils.
