Oooo..all these ideas are inspiring me. We currently have all the shoes out on the back porch and try to keep them there (except for the "good" shoes) because the crocs and boots are worn in the barn and who knows what is on them! But since we've only been here in spring/summer I've been wondering how this will work when fall and winter come!
We have a totally inconvenient front door that none of the family uses, a porch door off the family room that everyone uses, and a laudry room between the garage and kitchen. Me thinks the laundry room will become a mud room when colder temps arrive and I'd better be prepared for shoes there. I'm also having to figure where to hang my insulted coveralls when I have to go out and haul bales of hay to the cattle come winter...

Church shoes are kept in bedroom closets. All others are tossed into a basket near the bottom of the basement stairs (right off garage/kitchen door). Really dirty/wet ones go on porch until cleaned or dried.
I like the idea of shoe roundup, sounds like a great chore for my 3 yo.
Now just to convince my 1yo that shoes are not good for teething on!!
God bless,
Mary-NY

we keep ours in a big basket by the door but I saw a great idea I was thinking of trying. You put some wooden dowels in the ground close to the house but able to get the rain on it and you hang the rubber boots on them bottom up so the rain washes the mud off.

ETA: Looks like that coupon code is expired now! sorry!
I saw that Badger Basket 3 bin organizer in on sale through Amazon right now. Normally $44.20, but with the $40 coupon code it would just be $4.20 + $9.99 shipping.
Just enter the code LDAVISO3 at check out.

Oh I love those shelves, I'm just not sure where I would use them.
As for shoes, when the kiddos were little, and their shoes smaller, we used a big basket by the door. Eventually we outgrew the basket.
In our old house, the powder room was right near the front door and I hung a shoe pocket thingie on the back of the door. Now I have a hanging shoe pocket thingie in our hallway closet.
Two summers ago, dh built lockers in the garage. All sports gear and related shoes and bags are stored there. It was inspired by a Pottery Barn mudroom set up, so it has a built in bench and the back is pegboard. I would like to put some baskets under it so we can store shoes and boots.
We usually go in and out through the garage so it works for us.
I also have a hanging shoe holder off of our loft in the garage, so shoes can go there too. Usually though it holds mittens and hats in winter and sunscreen and bug spray in summer.

Well, as a quick solution yesterday I grabbed an empty box and put it by the front door. Threw in one pair of shoes for each kid and stacked the others inside the closet. Everyone was told to put their shoes in the box when they come in. My 4 year old will make sure at the end of the day that any other shoes are in the closet. Dh's will be on the edge of the steps where he likes them. I will need to find something more sturdy and cleanable especially before winter and wet snowy boots are the norm. I like the laundry basket idea so I can spray it out as needed. I know when winter comes there is going to be so much more to deal with...wet mittens, boots, jackets, etc. I'm trying to figure this out in advance. Oh, how I miss my mudroom with a large family! Our garage is detached and so that isn't any help and the door that everyone comes in doesn't have a covering; so, leaving shoes outside isn't an option.
Thanks everyone for your input!

From the description it looks like it: "When stacking multiple bins, you must always use the included safety brackets to secure the units together."
My husband made some of these as "toy bins". They are stacked 3 high and he came up with his own way of making sure they don't topple. They are in our school room and each of the 9 cubbies has a different 'activity' for the boys (string beads, lacing cards, stacking toys, etc...) that they can take out one at a time and work on while I'm teaching the girls. Someday we'll probaby use them at the door for shoes.

I have a large sterlit tote under my computer table (an actual folding office table type) there's not anywhere nearer a door that I can make work.. but it's soooo nice during the spring/fall when we can have mud.. all the rest of the year any shoes that are around get dropped into it.. but during those times it's full of rainboots and it catches all the water and mud.. so much easier to deal with that than it all over the floor. It seems to be sturdier than a laundry basket would be.. also holds more shoes for our family.. AND the water can't drip out the open sides
