i need some ideas for shoe organization. We moved to a new house in the country a few months ago and we do not have a foyer area. You walk right into the living room. There is a closet, but it is up a few steps and around a corner. Whenever anyone comes in they kick off their shoes and I end up with giant pile in front of the door and at the bottom of the stairs. I've tried to get them to put them in the closet, but they don't. And sometimes the shoes are muddy and I'd rather they weren't thrown in the closet anyway. Dh likes to have 3 pairs accessible by the door as well...boots, tennies, and sandals. With 6 people's shoes at the door it is becoming a hazard actually. So, does anyone have any brilliant ideas to organize this mess?

I have baskets in the closet for them to just throw their shoes into. I still constantly remind them to put their shoes in the baskets. Just today, my son had 2 pairs out. He's almost 11.
I wish we had a mudroom so this isn't a problem, but Texas homes don't come with mudrooms.

We put a bench right by our front door so at least they can be tossed under it.

We're shoes-right-by-the-door people.
We store ours in 3 black file crates... and they sit on top of a small 3 x2 rug. (We used to have five crates... but this was ridiculous.) I added a bench on topof the crates recently. As for the two confiscated crates -- I took the one for boots and put in the closet and the one for Sunday shoes and put that upstairs. I just take those out as needed.

It may not be the most aesthetically pleasing sight, but we use a plastic "book case" from Little Tikes for our shoes. This way if they are wet or muddy, it contains the mess. We also don't have a foyer or usable closet. Oh, and the book case is slightly behind a chair so it isn't too noticeable.

Rubbermaid tote. Big 'un. Right by the door, under a high tabley thing. We keep the big ol' mudboots in the mudroom bathroom shower (rarely used, but close enough to access when needed).

Dh and I were recently at IKEA, and we thought this was pretty cool, especially if you are short on floor space.

We turned a room off our laundry room, behind the garage into a pantry/mud room and all of the shoe go there. Everyone is allowed 1 pair of sandals by the front door. If you need more you have to get them!

I love that little shelf, Tracy! It would be great with a drawer unit on top to store all the hats and mittens I'm sure will be all over the shoes before I know it. I can't spend that much right now, but I'll keep it bookmarked for when I can or look around for something similar. Until then I think I'll look for a crate or something that everyone except dh can toss their shoes in...like a crate like a few of you mentioned. I think they could handle that.

We have a long wooden crate-style box under the table (which is really a sofa table) that sits at the bottom of our stairs, immediately to the left of our front door as you enter the house. This box used to be a toy box but is doing quite well as a shoe holder!

Pegboard on a wall, with pairs of longer hooks, can hold multiple pairs of tennis shoes, sandals and dress shoes (you hang them by the heel). Boots could be stored in a bin, on a boot tray, or on a shelf beneath the pegboard. We don't have wallspace for this idea upstairs, but have utilized the same concept underneath our basement stairs ever since we moved to our home in the country. It's amazing how many pairs of shoes we can put on one sheet of pegboard! (If you install pegboard, put strips of 1/4 in. thick wood as a frame, behind the pegboard, to allow space for the tops of the hooks behind the holes of the board). Pairs of hooks, spaced according to size of the footwear to be stored, automatically keeps everything tidy! Here, our everyday shoes are stored beneath an old pew by our main entrance...they continually migrate into the pathway for Mom to trip over! Sure wish we had space for pegboard by our doorway!

Do you have a place to add some furniture? You know the "If you can't beat them, join them" philosophy -- add something to place the shoes.
We have a mudroom, I admit, and added an Ikea Expedit for our shoes. This one is smaller than our version. I use both baskets that pull out to hide the shoes, or just the open "cubbies" to throw in the shoes. The giant size shoes (dh) take up more space, so he has two shelves. You could also find another way to add compartments within the cubes to have more slots. Also those craft stores have those cube shelves you can paint yourself that are similar in style (I can't remember if they are as deep).
Is there a way to keep muddy shoes outside? Do you have a porch? I've seen that approach, also.

We had this problem too and no coat closet to store them. We tried the bench idea which just led to a huge jumble of shoes and people shoving to get theirs when it was time go. I bought one of the 3x3 cubbies (total of 9 cubes) that they sell at Target or AC Moore ( they're about $30) and got different colored fabric/canvas handled bins that slide in. So each kid has a different color for all his/her shoes. I put it right in our garage (down a short hall from the front door.) It's honestly been the best home organizing thing I've done in YEARS. No more shoes kicked off when people walk in the door, everyone can always find his/her shoes and the front entrance area of our house is always cleaned up now.

We keep a large laundry basket by the back door in the garage. Everyone comes in there. Outside shoes get kicked off and dropped in the laundry basket before people come inside. When the laundry basket gets dirty, I just take it into the yard and spray it off. Only **outside shoes** go in the laundry basket. Church shoes and everyday shoes are kept inside at the foot of the kid's beds in a bin. They are only worn when we're going somewhere.

We have an expandable shoe rack that stands to the right of our front door. Everyone is required to take off their shoes and place them on the rack when they come inside. Children with tiny feet slide their shoes under the shoe rack.
We have two shoe cubbies (purchased at Target years ago) stacked on top of each other under the stairs for shoes that are not worn regularly and a big tub for rain boots by our sliding door to the backyard.

We have a big basket by our front door, and a double shelf for wet ones. Also, a shelf and bin outside all doors for shoes to gather and dry there.
And, the most important part.......it is someone's chore 3 times a day to run around the house and gather all shoes and put them in any of the 4 appointed shoe bins/shelves. And, to straighten the shoe areas. Right now, it's the 5 yo job morning and night, and the 6 yo after lunch. That keeps me from losing my mind tripping over shoes all day long. Even if they ARE all over the place, I know that it's "only" 1-4 hours until someone picks them up!

We walk into our dining room. 4 kids - each gets one shelf, using an old bookshelf by the wall to the left and parents shoes on the floor to the right. Like Suzanne, one of the kids organizes the shoes at the end of the day.
