Well, Lily is "Azucena" in Spanish :) I know because that's my mother's maiden name. Jen, where did you get that fabulous list? More than half of those are my friends' names!

I "know" lots of those names too because many Basque women have them as well. Like the Spanish, the Basques have name girl's names that are Basque locations associated with Our Lady - like Begoña and Arantxa.
Jen, said she got that list from another list discussion - I'm thinking whoever compiled or contributed to that list there got a lot of the info from this website I found today. Behind the Name: the etymology and history of first names
There is so much cool information here. You can search by nationality, find variations on different names, etc. I'm officially warning you...if you love names you're going to get lost in that site...it's addictive.
Here is their section on names deriving from the Virgin Mary:
Quote:
Marian Names are names which honour the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. Since Mary tends to be more widely revered by Roman Catholics, Marian names are most often used in Catholic regions. They are common in Spain.
The simplest way to honour the Virgin is obviously to use her name Mary, Maria, or one of its other cognates. However, at certain times in some cultures her name has been considered too holy to be used.
Some Marian names are taken from titles of the Virgin.
Consolata/Consuelo - consolation
Dolores - sorrows
Luz - light
Madonna - "my lady"
Maris - the sea
Mercedes - mercy
Milagros - miracles
Nieves - snows
Pilar - pillar (on which she supposed appeared in Saragossa in Spain)
Regina - queen
Remedios - remedies
Rocío - dew
Rosario - rosary
Socorro - relief, help
Soledad - solitude
Other names are taken from places where there are sanctuaries honouring her.
Ainhoa - France
Arantzazu - Spain (Basque)
Carmel - Israel
Guadalupe - Spain
Idoya - Spain (Basque)
Itziar - Spain (Basque)
Loreto - Italy
Lourdes - French
Meritxell - Spain
Naiara - Spain
Núria - Spain
Others are from events in her life.
Annunziata - the angel's announcement to Mary that she would conceive the son of God
Asunción - the assumption of Mary into heaven
Concepción - the immaculate conception
Encarnación - the incarnation of Jesus in her womb
Visitación - the visit of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth |

This site says this name specifically means "Madonna lily" which is even more Marian!
I wonder about a few of the names on the earlier list - ones like Belen which is Bethlehem, Navidad which is Nativity. Those to me are more a of stretch as Marian names - I think they are almost more related to Christ.
Though Carmel was mentioned, its more familiar forms like Carmen, Carmie, Carmela haven't.
What about Olivia as a form of OLo Olives?
Some of these names are pretty ethnic - Laura, would you be inclined to use an ethnic name or trying to stick with something more common?

I think we are pretty open Mary. The first name will be common but the middle could be more ethnic--though if the baby was a boy I do not think (as honky white Germans) we could have pulled off Juan! This is a fun thread:)

Mary, that's my most favorite name site.. they give so much more information rather than just what the author wants a name to mean.

Yes, those are common Filipino names too; Belen and Natividad are used both as last names and first names. I also have friends named "Resurreccion" and "Adoracion". Often I wish my fellow Filipinos could see the beauty and richness of our heritage, having received these names along with the Catholic faith from the Spanish -- but alas! Many now believe that that was merely a time of oppression and that our faith is/was an imposition. I digress... sorry.

I'd have to look, but I think it was from a discussion on Nameberry.
And I better not go to the site Mary refers to - way to much fun! (I can spend lots of time on the social security website looking at name popularity over the years too )

My name, Celeste, is the Italian version of Caeli.
So many lovely name ideas here!

So you're pretty much set on Mary as the first name?
Drat. That takes Regina Caeli out of the running....
If I could just convince DH about Regina and Stella...
I think I'd even try to pass Agnes (Agnus Dei) but I don't think that one will work...
LOL
Rachel (who is glad our families both run to girls)
