Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

oh ladies!! you are all at once putting me to shame and inspiring me. our family is small, just the 4 of us, but i have struggled with getting our grocery bill under $100. we dont eat much meat, i try to incorporate lots of veggies, but breakfast and lunch are still a struggle for me. i try to vary our breakfast some, but i dont really like to do anything in the morning, so we usually end up with store bought cereal, which i know is sooooo expensive, even if i get the generic raisin bran. i need to get a good granola recipe and a good place to get stuff in bulk.

but what do you all do for lunch if cold cuts are a no no? do you cook lunch too? do you plan to have leftovers heated up? share your secrets, please!

I have cards that I wrote that list stuff my family likes to eat, categorized by main protein. So, my 'ground beef' card lists:
Homemade hamburger helper
meatloaf
spaghetti
taco salad (add beans, make the meat stretch!)
dirty rice
shepherd's pie
sloppy joes
enchiladas
etc.

I started using lentils and rice as a substitute for ground beef, though. 1# of lentils + 1 # brown rice makes the equivalent of 3# of ground meat - for around $1.25!

I love the idea of the cards grouped by main protein with the meals listed that everyone enjoys - I am going to have to try this idea.

As for the lentils and rice as a substitute for ground beef - how does that work???? How do you prepare the lentil/rice substitute and how do you incorporate it into the meal in place of the ground beef? I am very interested in trying .... but don;t think I quite understand.

Thanks for the help!

I want to second the More for Less cookbook and Aldis. I use to shop at Costco, but if you are needing to cut back on your grocery budget, stay out of that place
Aldis is owned by Trader Joes, so you get many of the same products just packaged differently.

Get out - I didn't know Trader Joes owns Aldis!!

I too use Aldis. Just like the big grocery store warehouses, I can't buy everything I need there so I shop there first and then purchase the rest of the things I need at one of the less expensive grocery stores.
