I like a really natural look so I wear paler colors. My 2 favorites are Aveda Lip Shine and Physician's Formula Lip Plumper. I think they both have a nice, light feel. The PF is a little tingly though at first. Personally I don't like the Burt's Bees, to me it feels dry after a few minutes.

Aveda also has a lip tint and if you go to an Aveda store they will help you to try on as many types and colors as you like to find the right feel and shade.

My one real lipstick that I love is pink shimmer by Mary Kay but I suspect you probably need something a little darker than my shades.

Hi from another lipstick dropout -- I *hate* lipstick

That said, I have one from Gourmet Body Treats and a Burt's Bees gloss with some color to it -- I'm a "winter" (hah! I do know my season ) and I like wine/mauve colors because they match my lips better. I only wear lipstick when I absolutely have to (like at weddings). I just don't like the way they taste on my lips! And while I'm not a lip-licker, I find I lick my lips more when I've got lipstick on -- double ewww

I should get these. I don't think they're colored though.

Lip stain followed by a balm or chap stick gives me a bit of color without the heavier lipstick, but more definition than tinted balm alone. Found mine at Sephora.

Amy, your comments about your season caught my eye. Did you ever read Color Me Beautiful? -- I have no idea whether it originated the seasonal coloring idea, but it has served well this person who was once totally clueless about what colors to wear (or even what colors matched!) and only knew what she liked.

I don't I'd call myself ruddy but I'm quite pale with pinkness to my skin, and have quite dark brown hair that has reddish/auburn highlights (especially when bleached a bit by the sun,) and blue eyes that sometimes look greyish. I seem to be just about a total winter. Seems like it's all in the skin tone for me, and maybe also in its contrast with my dark hair. You just said brown, so maybe yours isn't as dark or in as much contrast with your skin, but just in case this has any relevance... My husband really likes purplish lip colors on me (and my wardrobe consists largely of black and purple). I have to be careful with what colors I choose for lipstick because my teeth are much too yellow , but after I read Color Me Beautiful I realized that I looked really nice in reds that were utterly devoid of yellow or orange tones but looked (and even kind of felt) bad in ones that had any hint of those tones. Of course, you might have other reasons to want to avoid any red in lipstick.

take a small mirror when you shop.. and then you can compare the color of the lipstick with your lips with them both in the same lighting

Ooooooooo I can't wait to read this topic but will quickly share the solution to my lip woes:

Buxom Lips - no I'm not kidding! If you have an Ulta near by, go check it out, Amy. It's a lip gloss that isn't icky goop, it has a plumper - a tingle - that seems to improve my lip circulation (at my age "plumping" is shooting for the stars but at least I get better natural color ) and even the darkest color isn't too dark.

Gotta run!

Love,
