The "girls and makeup" thread in the other forum reminded me about this - I need lipstick help!

I don't normally wear a lot of makeup. Mascara is my "go to" makeup, which usually only winds up on my lashes for church.

But lipstick, ugh! I cannot for the life of me find a good color. Is there some way to know what looks right without buying $100 worth of colors? I feel like I've tried all types of colors and nothing looks right.

I think I have very odd coloring, because when answering those color surveys about what "season" you are, I *should* be a spring or summer - I have pale/ruddy skin, brown hair, blue eyes. BUT, I get many more compliments when I wear the winter colors - deep red, navy, black... but I can't pull off a red mouth!

And then there's the whole lipstick "feel" issue - what is out there that doesn't feel like paste after a few minutes? I need something light and moisturizing feeling or I'll go nuts (I'm a little sensory defensive )

So I guess this is a little poll - do you wear lipstick? What kind do you like? How did you find a good color/colors for you?

Embarrassed to be pushing post...

Oh, no- I am all ears. I am also a lipstick drop out. Only I love it but am just too cheap to pay big bucks for it .

I keep hoping to find a bargain wonder brand.

I think for awhile CVS was offering your money back if you didn't like the color...

Usually the ladies at Clinique counters are helpful with advice about shades that work for people's coloring. Their products are a little more pricy than some, but if you get something that you like, you might decide it's worth it.

My preference when I wear it is to match my lip color. Then I put it on and actually wipe/blot most of it off leaving color but not thickness.. and a bit of powder over it helps to set it.

I prefer a nice gloss - choose something in a neutral shade but in a slightly deeper hue than your natural lip color. I'm fair, so I like to choose something in a wine/mauve color. It adds a bit of shine and depth of color without saying, "HELLO" I like Almay. I keep one in a completely neutral shade for everyday, and one in the darker hue for special trips out...like to the market!

I have also learned that adding a light layer of beeswax lip balm (I can't link as I buy it through our local beekeeper) or Avon Dew kiss or another clear lip balm type product (not Chapstick - it's way too waxy) on my lips before applying lipstick makes the color go on much more evenly and keeps it from blobbing in icky places.

I've started using terratints which are natural tinted lipbalms, which make a nice strong colour. I don't know how expensive they are as my mil gave me two, but they don't have a cakey thick texture and feel slick and light but do brighten me up a little! If I apply, blot, apply, they last better.

I decided recently to jump on the Clinique Black Honey bandwagon... after reading lots of reviews. It was a bit pricey for me ($14) but I really like it. It's supposed to be one that's good for any complexion. Nice lip feel, light color but more color with several swipes. I also like the Bigelow lip colors at Bath and Body at the mall. I'm not sure what color I have but it's neutral, smells like mint and feels nice on.

I like this topic!

I wear gloss, too. Hate to admit it, but sometimes I read those "fashion tip" articles that will come up on the sidebar of a web page where I'm reading about Iran or ESCR or the Obamacare plan or something equally political--and I click and read and "decompress" for a minute.

Anyway, one article I read said the older you get (I'm 40) the less you ought to wear brightly colored lipsticks. The bright colors draw attention to the fine lines around the corners of your mouth or under your lower lip, and can make you look older than you are. Gloss, especially in light shades with a bit of sparkle, can do the job just fine--and "wears off" much less obviously than full lipstick.

This is OT, but another article I read recently said not to put mascara on your lower lashes. I was dubious, b/c my lashes are of the "invisible" variety, but tried it out. It worked--suddenly those under eye bags which any airline would make me check at the gate were virtually invisible!!

My coloring is probably similar to yours, Amy. Pale, but ruddy, I have dark blonde hair and blue/green eyes. My best color to wear is navy and white or maroon/burgundy. I have always worn a darkish rose color, but in a gloss. Lipstick always looks so heavy on my lips. And any lighter colored reds, I wind up looking like a clown. I might wear a natural gloss, but the dark rose always looks better. I tend to only wear mascara and lipgloss, because I generally don't have time for anything else, although I would probably benefit from a little foundation and powder!

God Bless,

SuzanneG, !

It's funny, but the only time I read celebrity gossip is the same. I'll be at MSNBC's news page and some silly teaser headline will be on the side, and curiosity will get the better of me.

Now, one thing I go looking for is each year's announcement of the Pantone "Color of the Year." This year's color is here. The information does not make me rush out to redecorate my house or buy a new wardrobe, but I find the whole thing rather fascinating for no apparent reason.

I really like Burt's Bees brand of lip gloss called lip shimmer. It is very light, understated, and feels good on the lips. I don't wear lipstick often at all, but when I do, the Burt's Bees looks nice.

Oh, yeah- Burts Bees lip shimmer is awesome. After Christmas I found a whole end cap full of 75% off lip shimmer gloss kits from Burts Bees at Target.

That was winning the lipstick lottery

I like the Burt's Bees as well as just plain chapstick made by Nivea (beeswax as well). Both of them are just great.

Has anyone tried Gabriel lipstick? It's an vegan/organic lipstick. I mainly like it because it doesn't have all the stuff that the non-vegan things might. Super Supplements sells the Gabriel cosmetics line, the lipstick is about $14.

I love the Burt's Bees as well, I love that cool peppermint feeling I get after applying. I usually go with a cinnamon color/brown with a bit of red to it.

For the last 10 years I've worn only mascara and use a lip pencil and that is it.

I use one of two colours for my lip pencil, plum or a pinky/browny skin colour.

I don't like the look or feel of lipstick, I don't like the gloss look, I LOVE the matte look of a lip pencil. I have never worn lipstick in all my adult life.

I always buy a good quality brand of lip pencil, one that is lovely and soft, not hard and scratchy!

I draw outline around the lipline and then lightly smuge the line inwards to colour the lip, then I lightly re-apply the outer line and I'm done!

I wear it all: foundation, mascara, blush and lipstick with a gloss on top for a sparkle/shine. Some days I just wear a gloss. "A little powder, little paint, makes you look like what you ain't" as my Grandma used to say!

Amy, lipstick is very personal. You have to start very easy, and I think it you will feel more comfortable wearing colors. I started with something pretty neutral, the same as my lip tone and continued to try a little shade darker. I don't wear red or anything, but I do wear a nice pinkish/rose color. It actually is the lipstick that comes in a bonus I get from Lancome. They really have the best lipsticks as far as feel, since it can have that cake-y texture. Most places (CVS included) will take/exchange something that just not right for you, so you may want to just try different things.

If you are okay with buying a few, I'm sure your girls would have a ball with you! Do you know of any Mary Kay ladies or anything? They are great to help you with color choices and whatnot. Free samples are always nice!

Wow, thank you everyone! I didn't know lipstick was such a hot topic.    I'm furiously taking notes.

mackfam wrote:

In my head, I understand what this means - but then I get to the store, and between the strange store lighting and the 1001 choices, it becomes a foreign language. I can't seem to look at a lip color and go "Yes! Neutral but darker than my own lips!" Hence this post.

I do love the feel of the Burts Bees that several of you mentioned. I bought the color that everyone was saying looked good on them. I found it too pinkish (or something) and it clashed with my skin and everything I wore. Maybe I should just try another...

Maybe in my free time I can get myself to a clinique counter for a revamp and try the black honey.

Or I could have a lipstick party. OK everyone, come to my house with all your old tubes of lipstick and we'll all try them on and see what looks good.
