Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I think I've resolved the issues with the hospital wi fi and am hoping this posts. God is SO good to us, and we have been so aware of the prayer support we've been receiving. This morning I was, honestly, beside myself. We miss the children SO, SO much (I've never been away from them except for adoption trips)but going home seemed far away as Ed was very sick, and in my mind as a nurse unreasonably sick considering that his surgery was on Saturday. Yesterday he couldn't keep anything down and the antibiotics were just attacking his g.i. tract. He was so pale and miserable. He was so weak it frightened me. I couldn't understand why he was still being pumped full of very strong antibiotics if his incisional and blood cultures were negative and his white blood count was normal.

This afternoon God sent one of His angels in the form of a hospital chaplain. He came in to see us and was so kind and caring that I found myself pouring out my frustrations with communication with the infectious disease doctor. I explained how stressful things were with trying to coordinate rides for my boys to baseball tournaments and finish 4-H projects from 500 miles away for all the children. OK, I got a little teary. He prayed with us and asked for wisdom to be given to the doctor who was our "challenge". God bless this man forever, because within minutes of his praying with us and promising to help, the terrific original neurosurgeon and his nurse practitioner (whom we love) came over and called the doc covering for the difficult infectious disease doctor. They recommended stopping the antibiotics, resolving the "tummy" issues, and sending us home asap. Within half an hour, the covering infectious disease doctor came over and did everything we wanted!!!

Ed has tolerated normal food all day, and is sitting up. He's starting to crack jokes with the nurses, which is more like him. He was so quiet yesterday and just didn't want to move. Now he's more like Ed!!

We can go home once "the runs" are no more. Maybe Saturday morning?? Please continue to pray that we can get home without incident and as soon as possible. Didn't we have a ministering angel today????

Oh, Mary Alice - it's such a privilege to witness God's extraordinary generosity through the prayers of this man! I'm so hopeful that you and Ed will be heading home very soon to your family whom I know will greet you both with such welcoming arms!!!!

I'm praying faithfully here that this may be so!!!

Continuing to pray for this situation. I hope they can head home soon and that things go smoothly on the homefront while they are away.

ETA--should've read the whole thread first, great news! Hope Ed continues to feel better and the trip back to Kansas goes smoothly and happens soon!

Prayers continue Mary Alice! How wonderful to have a chaplain who listened and prayed with you. God's many blessings continue to shower down on you and yours.

Hugs headed out there too!

Well, Ed's had a better day today (the best so far!) In fact,he's up in his wheelchair and sitting beside me. It feels so nice to be able to look over and see his face with good color and his usual sweet smile.

The g.i. tract issues seem to be resolving (though when I found out that while he's taking immodium so he can tolerate a 500 mile drive and the night nurse gave him a laxative I nearly lost it) so the doctor promised that he'd let Ed go home tomorrow if "the runs" are over. I think my children need their mom home. My babysitter ( a young man with 8 younger siblings) called me this afternoon and asked how to get neon green playdough out of my youngest son's hair and eyebrows before his baseball game. The mental picture just cracked me up, but oddly he didn't find this funny at all. I asked him to take a picture before he attacked it with olive oil and couldn't help laughing. He was not amused. Maybe in my 20's I would have thought it was pretty awful, but at my advanced age, it's a scream. Or maybe I'm so tired I'm punch-drunk?

Anyway, for so many, many reasons, we NEED to go home tomorrow. Please pray us home, and thank you so much for all the notes of encouragement and prayers. May God bless all of you for your generous hearts.

Mary Alice
p.s. Chari, thanks! I would love to see you again, but I have a funny feeling that the thought of driving in Kansas again is something you won't get past for a while. Though remember, when we drove to Denver last month for Ed's initial surgery, we were warmly welcomed with multiple funnel clouds...............

Well, Ed's g.i. troubles are getting better, but he is as weak as a kitten from all the bedrest and all he's been through with these "ripper" antibiotics, so we've decided to stay another day and try to build up his sitting tolerance. He's up in the chair but sound asleep after the minimal exertion of eating breakfast. He's just so wiped out.

I called Ed's sister, Alice, at the house, and she's got the kids cleaning their rooms and getting all ship-shape. She can stay the night, bless her. If Ed's up to it, we'll leave tomorrow morning. If not, then it will be Monday.

Have a great weekend!

THANK YOU ALL for all the prayer support. We are finally home and not planning to go away from the kids ever again! Just the chance to snuggle and read together is so precious.

We went straight from the hospital to Daniel's tournament baseball game and enjoyed the surprised faces when the children saw us. Poor Ed is still so tired that he needs help eating; he can barely raise a fork to his mouth. He needs to build up his strength.

Since we do live in the "OZ" mania area of Kansas, I can really say, "There's no place like home." Driving into the lush green Flint Hills last evening was so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. I love this place! Very different from western Kansas............. Remember when Sarah in Sarah Plain and Tall said that she wrote her name in this land? I surely have.

God bless all of you. Your prayers sustained our whole family, and we are forever grateful.

Mary Alice, glad to be back in Kansas
