I had hoped for some news before I turned in tonight. Mary Alice thought maybe they would know something late tonight, but I haven't heard from her. She will probably be trying to drive here tomorrow, so pray for safe travels and lodging availability at the hospital apartments as well. I'll post when I hear any updates.
I know she appreciates everyones prayers very much!

UPDATE!!
Thank you SO much for the prayers. I couldn't post last night because we had hours of severe lightning so everything was unplugged. Ed's flight had a bit of turbulence but they were able to skirt the tornadoes so they landed in Denver without difficulty. At around midnight the E.R. doc called me to say that though Ed's neurosurgeon is out of town for the holiday, they think they can fix this without touching the spinal cord part of his shunt. This morning at 7:30 Denver time they'll take him to surgery to work on the other end of the shunt, where they think the source of the leak is (x-rays aren't helping much). He's in his usual great spirits (they let me talk to him) and the best news is that after this surgery, the plan is 48 hours of IV antibiotics and then sending him back home on oral ones for a couple of weeks.
A dear friend's oldest son is going to stay at my house with the children for a couple of days, and my brother and plenty of neighbors will be dropping by so I'm not worried. Since this trip will probably be short (thank God!!) it made more sense to leave the children here.
Thanks again for the prayers. This forum is the greatest! My laptop is acting a bit off, so I'm not sure about updates. I may have to call Mary M to post or go to the library.
I'm praying for all the intentions of the wonderful moms here.
Mary Alice, soon to NOT be in Kansas

Thank you for your update Mary Alice, I'm heading off to bed but I'll remember your Ed tomorrow at Sunday morning Mass and throughout the day. May this be only a little hiccup in his journey to complete healing and health!

I am so glad to hear an update....continuing to pray for strength for you, Mary Alice, and peace and a quick recovery for your dear husband Ed, and that the Holy Spirit guides all who are involved in Ed's care. AND...that St. Michael watches over all back home!!

Oh, Mary Alice...I'm relieved to hear your update!!!!
I'm praying for Ed, his team of surgeons, your safe travel to be by his side, and the children and their many generous babysitters while you're gone! May Monday or Tuesday find you and Ed both back home safe and sound! So many intentions here....I'm calling in the Blessed Mother on this one! May her mantle of protection cover Ed, you, and the family and may her powerful prayers speed uncomplicated healing to Ed!

I'm so glad the news is good! I have been praying.
Aidan had CSF fluid leaking out of his head incision for 48 hours once -- we brought him home 250 miles and then had to turn around and take him right back to the university hospital to redo his incision site. It was scary since he was immunesuppressed....
anyway, I hope things continue to resolve in the best possible way for Ed.

UPDATE 7/5
Talked to Mary Alice a few hours ago. They feel that the surgery was successful. The antibiotic Ed on is on is pretty strong and making him very nauseous and miserable in general, but hopefully is doing its job. They'll know in another 24 hours if everything comes back clear and they can leave or not. The kids are doing okay but she is having a hard time being away especially if it were to go longer into the week. And there were a couple stressful events that happened here. Mary Alice again stressed how thankful she is for eveyone's prayers for their family and doesn't know what she would do without them. THANKS!!

7/6 Update:
Good news - Ed is much less nauseous today. It sounds like the culture results were negative which is good.
Bad new - his blood pressure is still really high, which is very unusual for him. Also Mary Alice is not happy about the overall care he has been getting in the hospital. When they were here before, he was transfered to the rehab hospital right away and the care there is so much better.
Doesn't look like they will be able to leave tomorrow - now Wednesday at the earliest. She is so hopeful that she can leave asap - please continue prayers.

I'm so glad the cultures came back negative. I can imagine the stress of everything.
My prayers continue for all of you, Mary Alice! I sure hope to hear that Ed has improved enough for you to go home soon! Remembering the children in prayer as well...I know they're on your minds!

Update 7/9
I didn't hear from Mary Alice yesterday and couldn't get ahold of her so figured that meant she was able to leave. Unfortunately, today I find out that isn't the case. The infectious disease doctor won't release him or take him off the antibiotics even though all his cultures are coming back clean. It's complicated. His original surgeon says there is no reason to keep him, but the hospital/other doctor won't release him. Mary Alice is understandable frustrated and desperate to be able to take Ed home. This is so much longer than they anticipated so there are issues with extending care at home for the kids. PLEASE pray for them to release Ed asap.
