Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Mary G.,

How are thee?

I would like to join the party.

Ok, so much for my rhyme...

why I can do it anytime

and the reason that I write

is because my crocheting is a fright

and I want it to be out of sight...

So, can you pm me some simple ideas?

and one day I'll go to IKEA...(that's all I could think of)....

Now this shows how really off the rocker, I am!

Thanks!

Thanks ladies for all your positive feedback on this. I'm also trying to get on the "dance card" of a few homeschooling conferences to talk about just this subject.
Will your annual Colorado trip be in June this year? Conference dates June 9-10. I'm not coordinating this year but know who is and might still have some pull to get you on the schedule.

Mary,

Some extra hints for struggling young knitters would be handy...dd (just 8) still needs me to hold the needles with her. Maybe we are using the wrong kind of needles?

Scottish boys all learned to knit, long ago and way back when.

When I was an exchange student in Ireland, girls in grades 3 & 4 learned to knit in school. I was amazed.

I love this idea. I hope it's a 110% success for you!

I know with my 5 yod I tried using big needles and yarn, but she actually has done better with small needles and thin yarn -- she's got long, skinny fingers and loves doing anything detailed and tiny (kind of tough on my old eyes).

Try a different size needle -- either larger or smaller and adjust the yarn accordingly. Make sure you're using a yarn that doesn't split. I know many of the kits come with the funky and fun yarns, but those can be really tough to work with, particularly if you're just starting out!

In Austria, the kids still learn knitting two or three times a week in school. Each year they're taught harder and harder projects until about 6th grade when they are knitting on their own -- and this is boys and girls!

Mary M,

If you get a minute, PM me the contact information. This year, I think we can arrange our annual jaunt to coincide with the Conference. Do you really think they'd be interested?

Maria P.

Thanks for the wonderful poem -- I don't think anyone ever wrote a poem just for me before .

Here's a great site with free knitting patterns Lion Brand Yarns patterns -- these are all pretty straight-forward and not hard to do. If you scroll through the list, you'll see kids' patterns and things for the house too. This is a great starting place!

Hope this helps. I sent Jenn some real simple projects -- using just Garter stitch -- pm me with your email address and I'll send those too.

Blessings.

Hi mary,

I don't even know what a Garter stitch is ...unless I do it and don't know what it is called ...

I will pm you.

Thanks!

Maria -- garter stitch is just knitting all the rows so you have ridges on both sides, or to put it another way, it looks the same on both sides.

It's usually what everyone learns first and then learns more from there.

Blessings,

I want it all!

I LOVE the idea of tying it into living books! Unique, fun, AND wonderful!

Sarah (our 10yod) asked if she could learn to knit, which means ME learning to knit with her. But I've always wanted to learn, so that's a great thing!

We bought a book, and JUST LEARNED how to cast on stitches, and do the first row. So far, we're just practicing and learning the just beginning stuff!

But we really LOVE it!

Thought y'all would get a kick out of this:

Here's a definition for living knitting:

almost 6yod says: "mom, do you know how to get a boy to like you?"
mom: "well, no. What do you mean?"
6yod: "just knit him something every Christmas. Pretty soon you'll be married."
mom: "oh, do you knit for him after that?"
6 yod: "of course. But then you can do it anytime you want."

Well, sort of ....

last Spring, Hillside Published my Great Yarns for the Close-knit Family ... it's over two dozen hand-knit designs inspired by a dozen great family read-alouds ... books like Pinocchio, Little House in the Big Woods, etc.

Margot also published, this year, another book that I wrote called In His Image: Nurturing Creativity in the Heart of the Home ... Elizabeth wrote the foreword for the book.
