Thank you everyone who prayed us through Ed's surgery and Annie's neuro workup at the ER today. Mary Machado is an ANGEL for taking care of my boys while Annie was in the ER. They loved her and her family. When Mary is praying for you and helping you, you just feel so safe and good. She's a treasure!!!
I posted about the day on my blog (at maryalice.typepad.com) and here's the run-down:
We Needed More Excitement
This morning Ed was feeling better so the doctor is discharging him early tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. The plan was to have Ed rest at the hospital as much as possible today, and that the children and I would clean the apartment, pack up, return library books to Englewood Library, return a movie to Blockbuster, and gas up the car. That plan was seriously amended.
Annie, who never is sick and never complains, told me she had an awful headache and stomachache shortly after she got up. She got worse pretty quickly. I gave her motrin and she got sick to her stomach. By then she was in tears (very unlike Annie) and inconsolable. I called my friend Mary M. for a doctor recommendation but they couldn't see her until 3 pm and by then she was telling me that her fingers and arms were getting numb. We loaded everyone up in the van and went to Swedish Medical Center E.R.
When it began looking like we were going to stay a long time, I took Mary up on her wonderful offer to take the boys to her house. She drove up to the ER and fed them and kept them until after supper. Talk about living the spiritual and corporal works of mercy!!!! Her prayers and hugs helped a lot, too. Jane stayed with me since her wheelchair didn't fit in Mary's car. I didn't want to leave Annie as they had decided that, due to her age and the sudden onset of such intense symptoms, the doctors were going to do a full neurological workup. A sweet volunteer took Jane down to the cafeteria to get lunch and then took her next door to Craig Hospital to spend the rest of the day with Ed. Meanwhile, Annie endured labs, an I.V., a CT scan of her brain, and then was incredibly brave and still for a spinal tap.( The IV morphine helped.) I was so relieved to see such clear spinal fluid in the tubes. As you can imagine, all sorts of things were running through my nurse-brain, like brain tumors, leaking aneurysms, meningitis, fun stuff like that. I kept praying "Jesus, I trust in You" over and over in my heart.
The docs finally decided that it is probably a migraine. Since she is so young and was so sick, they recommended that we take the copy of her CT scan and labs to a pediatric neurologist when we get home. Looking into her precious lovely face when she was so sick and I felt so helpless to take away the awful pain, and then rejoicing to see her sweet dimpled smile later on, I was thankful for such good medical care, for praying friends in person and on line, and for the steady, calming sense of God's Presence with us there. He smoothed out so many details, worked through dear friends and kind hospital staff, and reminded us yet again how cherished we are, and what a priceless gift our children are.
Tonight I'm praying many prayers of thanksgiving and that tomorrow's trip home will be the most uneventful day so far.
Please pray that we all get home to Kansas safely, that Ed's pain is controlled, that Annie is ok, and that when we do check with the pedi neurologist back home, Annie gets a clean bill of health.
It's amazing. Through all these challenges of the past three weeks, we have been so aware of the love of God through friends and medical staff. We have felt cherished by Him. And our hearts are overflowing with gratitude.
Mary Alice
p.s. Mary Machado is INCREDIBLE!!!!

Mary Alice, there was a virus that circulated throughout our winter 6 months ago and it hung around even into the warmer months..severe migraine, nausea. Not a cough and cold thing, one of those weird viruses.
I had an uncle that got it TWICE and he had the full diagnostic treatment that Annie had. A young relative also got it (12years old) and he had the spinal tap..it was a viral thing the doctors concluded on all occasions but due to the severity it always had to be thoroughly investigated..this all sounds so similar.
I am so sorry to hear what you have all been through.
Mary Alice I'm praying for you and your family's needs!
