Oh, how nice! A girl! The more children I've had, the more I want to know the gender of the baby. With our 4th (which was a boy! after 3 girls) I came home and started cross stitching his name on the Christmas stocking I had been making. The older girls were so funny..."What are you doing? How do you know-Oooohhhhh!!" It was really sweet...
God bless,
Angela

Actually, we're farther away from a consensus than we were immediately after I took the pregnancy test.
I've learned that the girl's name that we loved most (Sophia) is also one of my new sister-in-law's very favorite girl's name that she always hoped to use. So we are leaning away from using it so we can save it for her. She was very gracious and said she wouldn't mind if we chose it and that she'd be fine with having two Sophias as cousins someday, if and when she has a girl. But I certainly wasn't as attached to the name as she is, so I don't mind choosing another. We have a handful of names in the running, but no clear winners yet. I have actually begun praying that God would guide us to a name since it seems harder this time than in the past.
Our boy's name is another story. Maybe you all can help in the decision.
We had the same boy's name picked out for the past four pregnancies and had intended to use it this time, if we finally had a boy. It is Patrick Joseph. A friend recently pointed out that this name may not be the best one for our family. You see our last name is Starrs. I didn't realize this, but I guess there is a character in the Sponge Bob show named Patrick Star, who is a starfish, who goes around wearing a daiper and comes across as stupid.
Now I have concerns that a boy with this name would be teased by other kids. We are so out of the popular culture that I was completely unaware of the connection. But I realize that this show has possible staying power, so it could easily still be around when this child is getting old enough to be teased.
Dh thinks the show will be history by then and we shouldn't worry about it. Most of our friends don't watch the show, so teasing would really only come from kids we don't know very well. But I still don't want to cause problems for one of my children, if we can avoid it.
What do you all think? I'm especially interested in opinions from any of you who are familiar with this show.

I wouldn't let the show be a factor in my decision, especially when you have the potential to choose a name as beautiful and spiritually deep as "Patrick Joseph." My kids would not recognize the reference, and many homeschoolers probably wouldn't, so the risk of teasing, at least among his likely peers, is minimized. I also think the show's been around a while, and it can't last forever.
A friend of mine had two children within about eighteen months and named the first one Philip and the second one Lily, not knowing about the twins in Rugrats (Phil and Lil). She's heard a joke or two over the years about this, but it really hasn't been a problem at all. The kids, now seven and almost six, have never been teased. I doubt many of their homeschooling friends even made the connection.

Congratulations, elizabeth!
irene, i'm weird about names (no nouns like matt or verbs like bob) and so i would likely pass on patrick unless i really really loved the name. (if this is a girl, i'm breaking my own rule and naming her gemma (gem) so, see i don't even follow my own wacky naming rules if i absolutely love the name.) my kids have not ever watched spongebob and when i asked them who pat stars was, they said he was the jellyfish on spongebob. you've got a few months to go - maybe see if there are any other names you like better and if not, go with patrick joseph. my mother kept the same boy name (leo jr) and never got a chance to use it with 7 girls.

We finally came up with a girl's name which met our various criteria AND turned out to be one of our dds' favourites - though we didn't know that when dh and I hit on it . They ended up coming up with a short list of three in the hope of influencing us

Help! We are expecting a baby girl in early October, and my husband and I are having a terrible time coming up with a name! Unfortunately, our difficulties may lie in our baby-criterion. We already have two children: Thomas More and Marie Rose. Here are the things we like in a baby name:
1. The first and last name must be of a particular saint. Girl’s names cannot include a last name as a middle name (My husband really likes Bernadette Soubirous, but I don’t think a girl would like a last name for a middle name!). For example, we picked Marie Rose for Bl. Marie Rose Durocher, because we found out we were expecting on a Marian feast day, and we really wanted a saint with a Marian name.
2. No trendy/popular names. In grade school, 25% of the girls in my class had the same name as I did. To this day, it irks me that I can’t call even my closest friends without giving my first and last name. Any name that is in the top 25 or so names is automatically eliminated!
3. No Old Testament names. Our last name is German, and most people assume that anyone with a German last name must be Jewish. Therefore, we’d like to avoid Old Testament names if possible.
We’ve already started a list of holy saints that might fit our criterion, but unfortunately we don’t love any of those names. Names that we’ve generated thus far are:
Anne Catherine (Emmerich)
Margaret Mary (Alacoque)
Catherine (of) Alexandria
Elizabeth Ann (Seton)
Can anyone expand our list? We’ve tried to find other ways around this problem: For example, St. Therese of Lisieux can be associated with roses, but Rose is already our first daughter’s middle name, so Therese Rose won’t work.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Jen

You can always use Mary or Maria as a first name with the saint name as the second.Ex: Maria Therese, Maria Cecilia, Mary Francis, etc. You could also feminize a male saint name, ex: Maria Gabriella (for Gabriel) or Johanna Evangelina (for St John the Evangelist).

How about Jane Frances (de Chantal)? I also found a number of saints with double names beginning with Ann. I like to consult this website of patron saints listed alphabetically. When I look through this site, I noticed that many saints who are called St. (name) of (place) happen to have place names that sound like girl's first names. There is a Saint Margaret of Amelia, for instance, and a Saint Margherita of Lorraine. You could name a child "Margaret Amelia" or "Margherita Lorraine", if you chose.

Jen,
I'm confused about criteria. Elizabeth is often a top 25 name (it was number 12 in 2005), yet you are considering Elizabeth Ann? Will you consider a top 25 name if it also fits your saint criteria? My children and I were talking about this last night. Of my five boys, four have top 25 names, yet I never looked at one of those lists. Their names were chosen for saints and meanings.
My name is Elizabeth Ann. I hated it when I was little because my last name was Grzymala (say Griz-mall-uh). Were two "iz's" really necessary? I was Liz Griz. I was named for Elizabeth Ann Seton (actually I was named for nun who was named for Elizabeth Ann Seton), but I never had a particular devotion to her. Instead, as an adult, I've had a devotion to Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist (to whom Iprayed to protect my fertility during cancer treatment) and St. Anne (the grandmother of Jesus). It all worked out .

If you are considering names with place names these would work as would the names Irene mentioned,
Catherine (of) Siena (we know a girl named Siena Catherine)
Rita (of) Cascia
Brigid (of) Ireland (I know several little girls with countries names, Ireland being one of them).

What about Bernadette Lourdes (Lourdes commonly used in Hispanic cultures for a girls name)
You already have a Marie, so Mary isn't necessarily a name you are probably looking at, but there are so many names of our lady that would adapt to pretty girl's names:
Our Lady of Victory - Mary Victoria (all names in any order)
Our Lady of Grace - Mary Grace
Queen of Angels - Mary Angela
Our Lady of the Pilar - Mary Pilar
There are tons of Hispanic names that follow this tradition (Maria Luz, Maria Conception, Maria Soledad, Maria Rosaria, Maria Carmela)
Could also be done with the Archangels - sort of like what Irene suggested.
St. Michael the Archangel - Angela Michaela
St. Gabriel - Angela Gabrielle
St. Raphael - Angela Raphaela

Just chiming in now Erin, and you probably have all things 'wrapped up' now with names. The name I have put aside if we have another girl, fits your criteria, it is four syllables, unusual, religious, pretty(I think) and it is.. Annuncia Mary... naming in honor of the Annuncation but instead of a u sound like up we would say it will a u sound of put. We have two girls already and we feel there is a loose theme there already, Grace Eunice("Hail full of Grace")(Eunice means 'happy victory' and the Incarnation is definately that!), Angela Gabrielle (the Angel Gabriel) and now this name...I wonder if we will ever get to use it?
Of course don't mind sharing it, if it took your fancy, but honestly, those we have run it past so far, say, "Annuncia Mary? "

Thanks so much for the suggestions! These are great! Does anyone have any input about choosing minor saints over major saints? Although I really like both the names I've selected for my 4 year old and 2 year old, I've always felt a little guilty that I chose to name one after a major saint, and one after a (mostly unheard of) minor saint. I feel like both names seem to really fit the child, but somehow I feel a little guilty when trying to chose a name for this new baby: Do I ignore all the major saints, and choose a minor saint, only because I think the name is prettier?
My husband jokes that it is great to name children after minor saints - if they are relatively unheard of, they have less people requesting their intercession and more free time to pray for us!

Jen,
My neighbors named their baby girl Mary Magdalene and call her Maggie. I think it's a really nice name. Good luck naming your baby. Our baby girl will be delivered by c-section in precisely 20 days, and we still haven't chosen a name.
