Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

you get a baby bonus? is that like a tax deduction?

We get one here in the UK too (unless you have a fairly high income, which we don't ) - about £500, I think. Our tax year changes on 6th April, so for a June baby the actual date of birth isn't likely to affect the amount. We also get family allowance - a weekly amount per child, with a little extra for the first child.

And I'm due June 21st, so I'm hoping to beat you both to it . Both my dds were a little early (2 days and 8 days), and I'm hoping for the same again.

mary wrote:
will you be finding out the sex of the baby beforehand?

We hope to. We knew with dd2, but dd1 was being modest and keeping her legs crossed .

We have a boy's name lined up - the same one we picked when expecting our first dd, but haven't had the chance to use yet - but are struggling with a girl's name. Ideally we would like an Old Testament name and a saint's name - probably the OT name first, but not necessarily. Unfortunately there aren't that many OT girl's names, and some are already ruled out as dh has relatives with them and Jewish families tend to avoid calling children after living relatives. We already have Rachel Helen and Hannah Marie. Ruth, Esther, Naomi and Miriam are out, and we would prefer a different initial (not R or H). Our surname begins with L, so that is out too. Oh, and dh doesn't want me to tell anyone the names we are considering! A variation on an OT name would be a possibility. We would consider an unusual name as a middle name, but probably not as a first name.

Any suggestions?

A friend of mine always planned to call her first son Jack. When she finally had her Jack ten years ago, she was SO indignant that it turned out to be the most popular boy's name for that year. And it has been the top boy's name in the UK ever since!

Yes, Abigil is very nice. I'm also partial to my daughter's name - Leah. We have all Old Testment two syllable names but that was on no conscious effort on our part - it just happened then we noticed the "pattern" - David, Jacob, Leah, Joseph

I love middle names because it is so easy to choose unusual family names. Our middle names are:

(Emily) Ruth - after dh's grandmother who died right before she was born
(Grace) Judith - after my mom
(Nicholas) Jon - after my dad (who has always been called Jack)
(Isabella) Marie - after no one....except a variation of Mary...it just sounded good
(Anne) Adelle - after my grandmother who was dying when she was born

Mary and Erin - I love your discussions of baby names. I'm stuck on two and can't get past them.

Luke Anthony - Anthony is dh's middle name
Lily Candelaria - Candelaria is Dh's mom's name...she would be so happy!!!

I'll probably be looking this thread up while in labor (or worse, after delivery) as Dh will surprise me with "I don't really like Luke....."    That's what happened with our Nicholas and we didn't name him until day 2...after making a list of about 10 names and one by one, taking turns, we crossed off the names we didn't want...

Erica, i think both of your baby names are wonderful! i do especially love your girl name. i have never heard of candelaria before but it's very pretty with lily.

kathryn, are you keeping your boy names a secret in rl or just online? I hope if you are having a girl that you will share your boy name. i need all the suggestions i can get! what about deborah, judith, julia, martha, tabitha, or mary?

I saw the name matteo on the credits of a religious video yesterday and wondered how it is pronounced. it's latin for matthew, yes?

erin, what about
girls: therese, isidore, brigid (love this name!), cecelia,

boys: casimir, raphael, augustine, gregory

check out this catholic baby name site

Sorry Mary, I've been sworn to secrecy . And almost every Biblical girl's name so far has some reason why it won't work . And I can't share the couple we are considering for advice on good saint's names to go with them. Arghh!!!! Talk about tying to do this with one hand (or two?) tied behind my back. Off to look at the Catholic Names site in the hopes it will help.

kathryn, does your dh think that we on RL will suddenly make the name popular? or is he worried that there would be two 'whateverthenameis?" - we are an ocean apart!

No, he just has a "thing" about keeping the baby's name secret until he / she is born. I don't think there is any logic to it.

I like Dinah if you say it the correct Hebrew way (Dee-nah).

I suppose Keziah is too unusual? What about Adalia, Adah, Anna, Bernice, Candace, Deborah, Dinah, Elisabeth, Judith, Joanna, Julia, Martha, Mary, Phebe, Salome, Sara, Sarah, Tabitha, Veronica.

Hope one of these names may help. I've given up on my names, this poor child may remain nameless.

I think we finally have a girl's name (though I'm still not allowed to tell anyone!). It was one that dh ruled out when I first suggested it, but he has since changed his mind. And it fits our Old Testament name followed by saint's name criteria . After all that effort I bet the baby will turn out to be a boy!

I am so pleased for you. How thrilling. Mmmm I wonder if I hold out I could get dh to change his mind? Somehow I'm not too hopeful

I really like the name Siena. We have a friend (8 years old) with the name. Also, I know a 2 year old named Avila.

Jen and Mary,
Are these girls spelt with one or two n's? I'm thinking maybe of changing a little to two.
