Oh, it's just what I like MacBeth. No reason other than that it's my preference!

For me too, we have a TINY house, so that little bit of extra space is handy for my flat pans. I really need the drawer. And I really wouldn't like cleaning out a broiler oven (the drawer type).

The oven we bought came in a model where the drawer was just a drawer, or where it was a drawer OR a warmer drawer. We would never use a warmer drawer, so wanted to save the money. I also couldn't imagine emptying my pans out of the drawer just to keep other food warm, it didn't make much sense to me. But for some people, it just might.

Anyway, it's just preference, Rachel Ray uses a seperate broiler on her oven on 30 Minute Meals.

Okay, I'm still looking into this. If you want more BTUs for a good price, the next Amana up at the Sears website has these burners

High output: one 16,000 BTU
Precise simmer: one 5,000/600 BTU
All-purpose: two 9,200 BTU

It has been rated by only 1 person on epinions:
here
and I found someone talking about it on That Home Site:
"We accidentally encountered a relatively inexpensive Amana gas range where we're currently renting and are very impressed. The model is AGR5735 - continuous grates (if you care), 16K BTU/hr burner, excellent (and adjustable simmer), largest oven I've ever seen in a 30" range. All of that for something like $800 list but available for $700 or so. There is also less expensive model that doesn't have the 16K BTU/hr burner and a more expensive one that adds convection (but loses a little oven space). Despite comments made here about the dire state of Amana reliability, we've had no problems in the first two years. A lot of bang for the buck!"

Maybe this would be a good compromise?

Looks like a useful page (free) on Consumer Reports.org! It has some blurbs on Comparing the types of Ranges.

Well, I've been doing a lot of reading about BTUs and ranges tonight. Some thoughts and links:

* I LOVE the look of the ranges that MacBeth linked to, but if I was going to spend extra money it might be on a dual-fuel range (burners- gas; oven - electric). They are many under $2000 (but still much higher than the $800 Amana.) Also, I haven't looked at each one to check the oven capacity. Example

*This site (Consumers Search) does a "review roundup" of sorts. I have visited it before and like it.

* Here is an interesting discussion about buying large appliances online.

* I saw a tip to bring your everyday pots and pans to the store to see how they fit in/on the range

* While I like to search features etc. at Sears, I am not necessarily recommending them. I have had no problems with them (but haven't had to call on them in several years) but I have had three friends tell me in the past month or so tell me that they have waited 1-2 weeks just to have Sears come look at their appliance (under warranty).

* Actually, the more I look, the more I think that the 2 Amanas look good for the price and features. I also like the large oven capacity.(I have some large Costco-sized cookie sheets!)

Rats, now I wish that I needed a new one !

Good night!

I have a Maytag Geminiwhich I bought from a local PC Richards. I love it. I wanted a Viking but it wouldn't fit so this was the next best thing for me. It has the look of a commercial stove but fits nicely. There is a warming oven and broiler on top and a regular oven on the bottom. THe regular oven fit a 25 pound turkey without trouble. I actually brought my big roasting pan to the store because I was not going to buy an oven that I couldn't get a HUGE turkey in.

This oven puts out 16,000 BTUs which boils water pretty quickly. It has a power burst burner and a simmer burner which is neat.

I'm slightly jealous reading these posts. Although we have gas for our heat, my stove is electric. I miss my gas!

Elizabeth, I had a subscription to Consumer Reports magazine, and have their 2006 buying guide that I would be glad to look up or scan a page or two for you if that would help.

I got this range, per your recommendation (you should call Sears for commission ) :
More BTUs for a good price, the next Amana up at the Sears website has these burners

High output: one 16,000 BTU
Precise simmer: one 5,000/600 BTU
All-purpose: two 9,200 BTU

And we got an armoire style refrigerator and a microwave/convection oven.

All very inspiring !Off to cook!

How fun to get all 3 new appliances! (Wish our kitchen layout fit one of those armoire fridges -- way cool! )

argh, i just saw this thread!!! if i had seen this i would have sent you the range comparison chart i've been working on...

although, i couldn't be happier about your choice, since i currently have a similar one, also from sears -- though mine's a kenmore. if i'm not mistaken, they are actually made by GE (yikes, i know you had some trouble with GE before, and if i had the chance to do my research before i bought mine, i wouldn't have bought it if i had known it was GE!). BUT, i've heard GE has improved some on customer service the past couple of years since i was last doing research on this AND, sears has always had great customer service AFAIK.

have you named yours yet? mine's Geraldine:) i *love* the warming drawer feature....
