Tricia,
I've used AAS for two years now. I'll let you know how it works for us. Also, I would start older kids in level 2 because the first 2 steps of level 2 are review of level 1. I would only start absolute beginners (those just reading or learning to read) or children with serious spelling troubles (remedial - can't spell "mud", "path", "pink") at the beginning of level 1.
I really like the program because it is logical and easy to understand. It does take some mom time in the lesson part, but I have seen results that make it all worth while.
The way I break it down in daily doses (generally) depends on the child.
My daughter (a spelling ace anyway) does:
Monday - Phonogram Review (yellow cards) / Rules Review (blue cards)
Tuesday - complete a new step (only spelling out 5-7 practice words, 3 phrases, 3 sentences)
Wednesday - Phongram Review (red cards) / Rules Review (blue cards)
Thursday - complete a new step (as on Tuesday)
Friday - Spelling Review (green cards)
My other children (slower spellers or beginners) do:
Monday - Phonogram Review (yellow cards) / Rules Review (blue cards)
Tuesday - start a new step (not doing phrases or sentences)
Wednesday - Phongram Review (red cards) / Rules Review (blue cards)
Thursday - quick review and complete the step (phrases and sentences, too)
Friday - Spelling Review (green cards)
When we began the program, the older kids moved along at about a step a day while we reviewed the basics and got used to the program. We got them to the point where they were finally seeing something new and then we slowed down to the above schedule.
Does that make sense to you? If you have further questions, just let me know...I'll do what I can to help!
God bless,
Christine

Thanks Becky and Christine.
When you say it takes a big chunk of time how much exactly? What I love about Phonetic Zoo is that I am largely out of the picture

Tricia,
I also have used AAS for about two years now; my son has almost finished level 2 which doesn't sound impressive until you know how impaired he is.
I try to spend about 20 minutes a day on spelling which means we don't have a weekly schedule; we just do about the amount I think he can do in twenty minutes a day.
I can't sing the praises of AAS loudly enough. Somehow it just reaches my son in a way that I wouldn't have thought possible. It is a blessing for us.
In Christ,

I'll jump in. We've been using AAS for over 2 years, now, and I love it.
It takes us about 20 minutes per day per child. (I have children in 2 different levels because of age differences.)
My dd is making huge progress. I see it in other subjects and everyday writing.
God Bless,
Anita

Has anyone completed purchased Level 4 and beyond? I've just completed Level 3 with my older children and am considering what to do next. To buy Level 4+ here in Australia involves expensive shipping costs and I'm wondering if they really need it now. With the three levels 'under their belts' could they now be alright?

Well, I will shortly be buying level 4 for my youngest. I guess it depends on your student -- not all the phonograms have been covered at this point. If your student is able to spell generally well at the end of level 3 then your student may well not need it. Mine definitely does need more as he is disabled.
In Christ,
Deborah
