Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This is an issue of prudence. In the end, sarahb will make a prudential decision about the books she places in her children's hands as well as Marilyn...as well as everyone else here. We can offer perspectives on this issue, but it is in the end a prudential decision made in light of temperaments, maturity issues, prompting of the Holy Spirit, and so many other factors. All have access to and (hopefully) cooperate with the abundant graces given to us through the beautiful Sacrament of Marriage - these graces assist us in discerning.

Caroline, I thought your discernment guidance was useful and succinct. We are indeed nourishing our children with the reading material we introduce to them. A little bit of junk food is harmless, but once a twisted idea is introduced to a child, it becomes poison rather than a potato chip. Discerning the difference is becoming increasingly difficult. There is some great wisdom on this thread for assisting one in discerning!

Yes, Jennifer, I wholeheartedly agree with you that this is an area for individual family discernment. Thanks for your comment!

I was thinking along the same lines as Jennifer.

I would add that my YA who is 19 is very well grounded and sees what she reads as pretend. In fact, I think it is cute that she and a couple of friends think that Star Wars is cool.

I recently read Anne Rice's book about her coming back into the Church. It was interesting to read what it was the propelled her to write the way that she did while she considered herself atheist. While I wouldn't describe her as YA, there was some pretty heavy thinking about characters in her books.

I know that cannot be said about all books, and by no way am I endorsing the books that Ms. Rice has written.

I don't have a problem with YA fantasy with my 15 year old. If it doesn't have a horse in it, she will not willingly pick it up to read. LOL

One more thing I would say, evil isn't always ugly. While I understand the symbolism of dragons of the past, I would venture to say that the symoblism is changing. I think that it is very important for our children to know that ugly and evil will very often be very attractive and that you need to be able to discern what is true and right, and what is of deceit. It is harder now than ever.
