Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Are you doing it next year Theresa (we will start chem. in a year (bio will take us through Christmas next year!).

Yes, probably. Ds is pretty psyched about doing chem. He's wanted to do it for a while now but I wanted him to wait until he had a bit more math under his belt. He should be ready next year I think.

We will have Algebra 1 (Jacob's) under our belts but will not have Algebra 2 yet...

You should be fine. My son recently finished up algebra one and has just started alg 2.

Theresa, do you like that lab manual? I found it on Amazon.co.uk and would like to add that to my collection. I like all the reading he is doing, but sometimes look for a bit more structure to the lessons and more experiments.

My son just completed algebra II and is reviewing geometry before he moves on to advanced math. He does not seem to be struggling with any of the concepts; however, we only just started chemistry late last semester. For some reason, I cannot put my dc on the regular school year calendar. And the school year here runs quiet different than in the States.

We might try tagging along with you, Theresa, at least enough to call it "Physical Science". My ds will be in the middle of Algebra 1 and we'll probably be in the middle of moving, and with a new baby, but hey! Sounds like the right time to do chemistry, doesn't it?

What are the chemicals like in that lab manual? I'm really hoping that my ds can do a full chemistry course at a community college, because with so many little ones around, I think it would drive me a little nutty trying to supervise a chem lab. But, like I said, I'd like him to get enough of an intro to chemistry to be able to call it physical science. We haven't done *too* much chemistry up to this point.

I have not had it in my hands yet, so I cannot really recommend it until I do, although what I've seen online looks good. Very thorough. If you do the "look inside" feature you'll see where the author goes into detail about which labs are good for 1st year chem, second year, and AP exam. I found that very useful. I couldn't see the list of chemicals online, but there are reviews which state that the author lists sources for obtaining the chemicals.
I plan on getting it later this year so have time to go through it and plan which chemicals and lab equipment I'll need to order and have them ready to go when ds needs them.

We have not used it yet, but I am very intrigued by

The Spectrum from Beginnings Publishings. It is made to use in the Freshman year of high school.

See Cathy Duffy's review here.

I will be using the 21 lesson Bridge Math this summer. It is exactly what all kids need before entering high school science, imho.:-)

Annenberg Media has a 26 half-hour high school chemistry video series that you can watch for free as video on demand (VoD) that might make a great supplement for you.

The World of Chemistry

Kris, thanks for the link to the video. I think this will be helpful in reinforcing certain concepts.
Theresa, the lab manual arrived today. I flipped through it quickly and am now off to do a more detailed look; however, it looks exactly like what I want. As far as finding chemicals, I purchased a chemistry set, but finding common household chemicals (such as ammonia which I had to mail order) can be a bit of a challenge. The chemicals necessary for Joy of Chemistry are listed in the book as well as ways to create some of the chemicals at home. And sometimes that can be the fun part of the experiment!

I have that awesome chemistry book theresa! It's great. The author also has a message board where everyone discusses helpful hints and details and user follies. There's even a rather slow home school section. I spoke to the author and he loves homeschoolers and the book even mentions homeschool users.

We have not started it yet, but it looks like great fun. I'd want to do it myself!

If you run into difficulty getting chemicals, you can order them from several places.

Home Science Tools is a company run by and geared towards homeschoolers.

There's also Carolina Biological Supply and Blue Spruce Scientific Supply.

Oops, I just noticed you are in Wales. O.K. so the shipping would be a bit much from the US to you.

Thank you for the sites, Kris. Home Science Tools only ships to the US and Canada. But it looks like Carolina Biological Supply does ship overseas. I think that part of the problem is the restrictions on what you are allowed to bring in and out of the country. I know that I was allowed to bring in preserved lab samples for biology, but not the chemical necessary to place in a kill jar for bugs.

That sounds great! Now I'm pretty excited about getting it myself!
