Here is an update.
We telephoned the police officer in charge of the investigation today. She told us that the Inspector has the final decision, but that she fully expects he will concur with her decision that NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED! 
Even better, there will be no record that a Child Protection investigation was carried out, against any of our names, and the enhanced Criminal Record Bureau checks that my son needs for some of his job applications will be completely clear (as, a fortiori, will ours be).
This must be the most speedy resolution to a Child Protection allegation in the history of the force: two weeks, and over Christmas!
Naturally I am more grateful than I can express for your prayers which were like balm to my soul. To be the target of such malice, something that has never happened to me in my life before now, was extraordinarily horrible. Then to be lifted up by your sincere prayers was so beautiful. Thank-you.
