I have short hair, and I really really really want to grow it out. I say that all of the time, then when it gets to an akward stage (which doesn't take long when it's this short) I hack it all back off.
I'm considering wearing a head scarf instead of cutting it off. Would you wear this out and about, say to sports practices, the market, etc..? I don't want to be mistaken for Jewish, but I really like the look!

I know what you mean! I love the look of head scarves like these and the others primarily worn by Orthodox Jewish women but have always been too self conscious to wear one. I am curious what others have to say and I what you ultimately decide! Maybe you'll start a new fashion trend!

honestly?
I do think it's cute, BUT
it reminds me of cancer patients covering up lost hair. 
namely my own mother during that time.

I thought of that, but a hat never stays on, kwim? It seems a head scarf I could put on and wear all day, indoors or out, and avoid the bedhead look when I go inside.

My hair use to be that short LIsa, even shorter! Now my hair is past my shoulders and curly. I totally know the awkward phase.
I love love baseball hats. I think they are very cute and fashionable too. Plus they are easy to come by and places like Walmart have cheap lightweight solid color ones.
Luckily nowadays too, lots of little barrettes and hair clips and such are fashionable too, so if you had to put up a flyaway or two it wouldn't be so awkward I think.

I have a beautiful picture of my mom holding me when I was 9 months old and she has a head scarf tied in a bun just like the one you showed in the link! I asked her once and she told me that it was all the rage in Spain (where I was born) in the 70's (I was born in 1976.) Your post brought back a beautiful memory for me.
I could never where my hair like that just because of the heat factor in Miami but the orthodox Jewish community here does and no one bats an eye. I think this is a personal comfort point. Do you have very short hair right now? Is is curly or straight or somewhere in between? My MIL finally let her hair grow out after 20 years of really, really short hair, (3 inches long short) by straightening it. This way her hair would lie straight. She would straighten it early in the morning and it would stay. She also started wearing more headbands to kind of "hide" the awkward stage.
Hope it works out for you. I know hair is so very personal. Thanks for sharing.

What a lovely memory Mimi! Yes, my hair is very short, maybe 3 inches on top, and super straight and fine. It was almost chin length a few months ago, and I cropped it off again - and I regret it. My hair grows really slow too, and I'm easily aggrevated by it.

Maybe when you tie the scarf, you can turn it back from your forhead an inch or so to show that you do have hair? As long as it doesn't make it all slip off your head then!

I think if you want to wear it.. go for it. I just wouldn't bet on it staying on all day long but then nothing stays on my head all day long.. headbands, barrettes, etc. I like cute hats that aren't baseballs hats.. smaller brimmed sunhats.. plunk them on your hair on the way out.

and the women and girls wear this exact thing.
same reason I don't "do" jean skirts often anymore- I got tired of being mistaken for Apostolic Christian everywhere I went!!

My hair is at a really annoying stage right now, and I wear soft fabric headbands that can be pulled across the top of my head (hard to explain) You can still see my hair at the back, but it covers the front, which is the problem area for me. Also, they are very comfortable, so I leave them on all day with no problem.
I get them at coveryourhair.com. They have a lot of choices there and run a lot of sales.
I think you should wear whatever you like and whatever feels comfortable to you.

I would think it might look like you are in recovery from chemo too. IMHO. What about a funky beret or some sort of cute crocheted hat for the winter months? (I know summer is coming on now, but later....) My daugther has the cutest crocheted caps I found at a thrift store. She wears them a lot and people comment on how cute she looks and how it looks like someone from the 30's. (They all keep saying she looks like Bonnie from Bonni and Clyde fame.  ) Since you have a cute face, I am sure you can get away with a lot of cute hats/hairbands etc. I look like a real dork in any hat! My Mother says we can't wear hats because our heads are too big!!!!

I've worn scarves on my head my whole life. Its true that I think some folks assume that either you are orthodox Jewish or a cancer patient but I've had nothing but positive comments and a few amused raised eyebrows. I even wore mine in mass a few times when I was trying out head coverings but didn't want something as conspicuous as a chapel veil. Somehow a brightly patterned batik print seemed less showy!
There is something that I really like about the practice of covering my hair. I can see why orthodox Jewish women enjoy this aspect of modesty.

Hmm, if cancer patients wear scarves to not be so obvious.. isn't it a disservice to not wear a scarf because they might?

I love that website - I have ordered from there for years and I love all the items i have gotten.
I don't particularly like the bun, but I do love the look of The Crown and the Dutch Crown. I have worn them out like that and gotten compliments. But I did feel funny the first few times (and again now that I am in a new place.)
