ALmom, I did find this link to Bible Historyby Fr. Gilmour. It is the entire book(well, I assuming it's the whole book, I actually only looked at the first few pages ) online for free. Great resource, perfect price! Praying for safety for you all tonight during the storms.

My absolute favorite, all time, Bible History study is an old Benziger Bro publication from 1936 called Bible History by Right Rev Richard Gilmour, D.D. Don't know if it is in print or not, but if you can nab it used, it would go really well as a read along with the timelines mentioned above. It gives a really good intro to the more in depth connections.

Just with a quick look at the two (the one mentioned online free and the one at Amazon), I noticed that the one online free had illustrations and the one at Amazon did not.
God bless,

Has anyone seen this scripture study for children?
http://www.chcweb.com/catalog/TheGospelofLuke/product_info.h tml?s=8a188f3lhtehu62jfcojur8hs5
There's also a set for scripture memory verses A-Z and one on the Acts of the Apostles. Each book is 12 lessons long, which means it might be possible to get through all books in a year. It says its graded for about ages 3rd-6th grade. There are a few samples on CHC's web site, but I'd be grateful to hear from anyone who has seen this and can give a more detailed review.
I'm wondering how it might compare with Memoria Press's NT study, which I am also considering. The thing that is bugging me about MP's study is that it relies on the Golden Children's Bible. I was hoping to use a verse by verse bible instead of a children's bible.
Brenda, are you still planning on using MP's study? I'm wondering if you have children over 6th grade who will be following along?

I order the Gospel of Luke and A-Z Memory books from CHC. I really liked the Gospel of Luke and could see using it easily for even younger children (it has nice, large, colorful visuals). I'm going to use it in as a supplement as we read through the Bible. It covers the Gospel at a basic level, and it could be a great spine. It only quickly touches on the parables of Jesus, so I will supplement that portion with Tomie de Paola's The A-Z Memory book was not as impressive. It consists of Bible verses beginning with each letter of the alphabet. There is a coloring page, a bookmark with the verse, and a worksheet that is small type and crowded with no color designed to use with the teacher/parent. My problem with it is that the writing spaces are small, the curriculum has no "flow" (just whatever the verse refers to), and most of it you could easily do yourself (such as identify vocabulary words, explain what "Honor your father and mother mean" and so on.) If you want Bible verse coloring pages, it works for that. Also, I found this link to a Bible catechism that is used by CLAA and that looks really good.Parables of Jesus

Has anyone seen the Advenure Kids bible study that is new at CHC? Any thoughts on what age it is geared for or what it is like?

We use the Great Adventure Kids. I REALLY like the timeline, coloring book, and card game. Honestly, if money is an issue, just buy the timeline. It is that good. The kids like the reminder of the bookmark, too. The prayer beads are something you can make yourself if you want to...we don't use them. One of the little kids broke them on day 1.
If you have any specific questions, let me know.
God bless,
Christine

Great Bible Adventure - Kids Timeline - Ascension Press (also sold by CHC)
Here is my review of the product after a few hours of receiving it (I see it is full of typos! ignore those!).
In the ensuing months, I have used the card game and timeline with children of ALL ages, including grown-ups. I would highly recommend those two components if nothing else.
This Wednesday evening, our parish religious education program will be doing it - I've marked a few Bibles with the pertinent Scripture passages, we'll divide the children by ages (parents can go with whichever group they like) - adults will read the main events from each period while the children string the appropriate color bead. Then we'll move over to tables where I'll have set up a number of tables for each card game - or children can choose to color the coloring book pages.
It's a really easy overview, with lots of depth!

Well, I'm still hunting around for what would work best for my family. Now I'm thinking maybe I'll work the virtue stuff more with my 4 and 6 yr olds and the formal bible study with my 9 and 12 yr olds. I am having too hard a time trying to make a way to make both relevant to all the ages. And when I decided to do that, I started feeling more drawn to Memoria Press' Christian Studies. I'm thinking about moving through it at more than a lesson a week, and adding in some extra stuff for history for the 9 yr old. I'm going to start a new thread on that, if anyone is interested...

Caroline,
Your Bible History link is the exact text I have from what I can see. There is a compendium of Church History as well in mine (which covers some secular history like the French revolution though in brief and in connection to the church) and some maps (in color in my book) in the back. It even has a pronunciation guide for place names and such! Since it was written in 1936 it will be old calendar when it discusses feast days but that shouldn't be too hard since we are bouncing between old and new calendars anyways - doing both the Ordinary and Extraordinary form of the Mass.
Thanks guys for bringing this up. I pulled my books off the shelf and decided that this will probably be my youngers history for next year so now I'll just observe and see whatever great ideas you come up with.

Well, I was coming to gripe a bit because I can't find anything I like! I like that the Bible Study Guide is more in depth and really has a tremendous amount of review and is a study of the bible and not a study of a story bible. But it also feels like it might be very overwhelming to try to pull off, and the art leaves something to be desired...
I like the format of Christian Studies better. Seems more do-able, even though its a story bible. So I was looking at the tables of contents for each volume and I noticed in the third book that the basics of the life of Jesus are covered but not much of the 3 yr ministry of Jesus. This is a huge disappointment to me because praying the rosary and the stations of the cross makes most kids fairly familiar with the basics already. I was hoping to really get into Jesus' ministry. It sounds like the CHC offering has the same weakness.
Caroline, since you have that de Paola book, could you maybe share the table of contents with us? Its not a "look inside" book at Amazon. What are you planning on doing to add to the Luke study?

Books,
First of all, the Bible Study Guide used to be just the teacher's guide part, not all the worksheets, which really do have awful art! It is very do-able that way. We would read the selection aloud around the table with the children who could read taking turns, then we discussed the questions, and then did a review game. Very simple, but effective and easy to do all together.
The Parable book has an assortment of Jesus's parables each with a large de Paola illustration to accompany it. The parables included are: The Sower, Weeds and Wheat, Good Samaritan, Insistent Friend, Mustard Seed, Leaven, Hidden Treasure, Pearl of Great Price, the Fish Net (Matt 13:47-49), Lost Silver Piece, Lost sheep, Unforgiving Servant, Laborers in the Vineyard, Prodigal Son, Wise and Foolish Virgins, Great Feast, Pharisee and Publican. Some are very short, so I planned to have my early readers work on reading them. There is a Miracles of Jesus book, too. These are both appealing for the younger crowd, and the pictures help the stories "stick", but you could also just read the parables themselves one at a time and use the children's own narrations to help with the "sticking".
As far as what I am planning, honestly I feel like a fish flopping about in the bottom of a boat! I thought I had it all figured out, then I found/ordered more resources, and now I'm a little overwhelmed. I spent today in bed with the stomach flu and had a chance to look over everything...SO...here's the current (probably still to be adjusted) plan: Beginning with Genesis, we are going to read aloud the important stories up to and including Abraham. I'll use the review questions from the Bible Study Guidea(which I already have from years ago) and also the notes from the Bible History book by Gilmour (discussed earlier, free online) to point out types and Catholic understandings of these OT stories. Starting in December, we'll begin the Gospel of Luke book and cover the Nativity to the Baptism. Then we'll continue in the Luke book, but I'll add a longer section on the parables by reading and discussing and narrating (either verbally, in pictures, or acting out) the stories. I think it will be Lent by that time and we'll cover the Passion, Resurrection and early Church during Easter. Then back to the OT picking up where we left off. Timeline events will go into our Book of Centuries (which I prefer to a separate "Bible Timeline" because these stories really happened in real history and it is good to connect them to other historical events). I'm thinking I'll put map work and narrations in a separate Bible History notebook. We already have an American history one. I still have to correlate all of this with an actual calendar, but hopefully it's not two years worth of material I'm trying to cram into one year!
I really enjoy your posts and I would love to hear what you finally figure out; I'm sure I'd love to incorporate some of your great ideas!

I like your ideas, Caroline. Great point about the timeline. I think I'll do that as well. I showed dh all the options I could find online last night. He likes the BSG best, but without the activity pages, so that's what we are going with. I'm relieved to have made a decision. I am a bit worried about making it all work, though.

I find it usually works fine IF I don't try to over-complicate everything. I tend to start off with a good, not-too-difficult, easy-to-use program and then when it works so well and I see that everyone is learning, I start to add on more and more STUFF to the original core and then pretty soon, I'm just overwhelmed. I'm going to try to resist this temptation! Another 23 years of homeschooling and I'll have it down!!
