Still thinking about our plan.
CrunchyMom wrote:
We get our beef as a part of a cow in the freezer. We are running low, and we decided that we will be getting another part at Easter and just use what we have for Lent (probably on Sundays). I'll allow a roast chicken once a week to make stock for soups, but that's it for meat. |

We usually do something like this too.....a variation of some sort....it looks different every year.
This year, maybe meat 1-2/week, using leftovers and stock throughout the week, and no shopping to stock up the freezer.

I asked my 5yo what he wanted to give up for Jesus this Lent, and he said "cakes, stories, dvds, going to the park, hurting my sister, going to the woods, playing and chocolate" - hmmmm!
My plan is to make the move on our new fasting plans for Friday and Wednesday during Lent, to give up watching dvds, and to do more Bible and spiritual reading.

Ice cream! The major family addiction. Also, it will be taking better of my Temple of the Holy Spirit, as I need to work on both weight and cholesterol as a way of honoring God's gift of health. And I WILL NOT feast on Sunday, because that only makes it Soooo much harder to fast on the other days. I know myself only too well on that one...
Also planning to be more disciplined in praying the Liturgy of the Hours (morning, evening, and night prayer; hoping to add in the Office of Readings).
Peace,
Nancy

Internet. I have to check my email, due to homeschool stuff, but I can do that from my ipod, but it is to tiny to check the forums so I won't be tempted.
And, we are going to glean some from the way the EOC does the Great Fast for Lent. We are still working out exactly how we are going to do that...

Last year I too gave up reading blogs for Lent, and it was an eye-opener for me, both in terms of how much calmer and content I felt, and also, how much discipline it required! I am a work-at-home Mom, and my job is computer-related, so throughout the course of the hours I am on-line legitimately, I am often checking blogs and this forum (etc..) Last Lent, I can't tell you how many times a day I had to REMIND myself that I couldn't check and why... Self-control was very necessary...
When I did finally come back to the blogs all those weeks later, I felt like I was 'catching up' with friends.
I am back to my old habits though, and am actually looking forward to the discipline. (Does that still make it a good discipline, if I am anticipating it happily???) Hmmm...
I am also planning to make Mass on Friday mornings as well as pray the Stations with my son (6).

Absolutely! Last summer, the kids gave up TV completely (this was actually harder for me than for them!). It was really hard at first, but we reaped much fruit from it and life was so much calmer, more creative, etc. We've gotten back into our old habits of turning on the TV every morning, and so I'm looking forward to turning off the TV for lent-- even though it will be a bit hard at first. It's still going to take a lot of self-discipline on my part, even though I am looking forward to it!
I am encouraged by so many of you posting your positive experiences with blog/forum-fasting. Thank you! Truth be told, I'm dreading it- like I said, I don't want to miss a thing- I just love all the conversations we have here and all the beautiful blogs you ladies create. (sigh) It will be good for me, though, and I'm encouraged a great deal to hear how beneficial it was for so many of you last year.

I think so too, Jen! I've been eyeing it for a while, and I found a brand new copy for .50 at a library book sale (gotta love that, right?), so I'm eager to dive in.

We have always unplugged as a family during Lent- except Sundays. I'd like to add in Daily Rosary, and up our weekday Mass to twice or 3x per week instead of fridays only as we do now.
Confession on Wed's- most likely will vary who can make it each week, but if I put it on the calendar every Wed, it should work!
Also, we are in a financial shut-down here. I'm hoping to creatively and without complaining make do or do without. simplifying our meals, our activities, everything. this will most likely mean not many Lenten craft type things, but oh well!

A friend of mine suggested doing The Love Dare for Lent. What do you think?

We are unplugging with a few exceptions. No gaming systems at all not even Sundays. No computer time unless for school and then limited. I will continue to moderate the forums at Sense and Sensibility and check emails but otherwise I will be off the net so no blogging, not even on Sunday or checking the 4real forums..it will be a sacrifice! We have agreed to watch 1 movie on Sunday as a family as our Sunday feast. I am actually eager for Lent to begin and see the fruit of unplugging (after the initial detox)!!

Yup - us too. Actually I never heard of the "Sunday feast" until recent years - we never grew up with that.
We have two days that I make an exception - my dh's "Food Fling" where he takes the children and meets up with all his fishing buddies for a big food fest at the shore and our Anniversary - March 26.

I think I'll be giving up pop (soda for those who call it that Soda for me has ice cream in it ). In Buffalo, we call it pop, just like we call chicken wings simply *wings*. We know they're made of chicken, and we know they are from here originally, so we just say *wings.*
I don't drink a ton of pop, but when I drink it, I really want it, and I really enjoy it. I did this one other time, and it wasn't easy, but it's also good for me.
I've been saying the rosary faithfully since making a particular commitment, and that's been very helpful. During Lent, I intend to write up my Mother's Rule of Life and implement it, and to begin committing certain prayers to memory that I've always intended and wanted to, but still haven't done. So in short, I want to make my devotion time more purposed.
I'm also going to try to work harder to get our home in order, and to commit time via schedule to doing this. I want to schedule online time (with a timer), TV time, etc., so that I'm spending less time on these areas, and more time on the priorties that are important to me, and my family.
That's my plan!

We make exceptions for birthdays too - unless it falls on Good Friday. The children understood that easily.

You know...I am so much looking forward to Lent.
My husband and I have been married 5.5 years, and we have decided that we are going to use Lent to really focus on our marriage.
We have one of those marriages where we have been faithful and devout Catholics from the get-go, thanks to the grace of our Heavenly Father, and yet, we have such problems with selfishness and anger and impatience and criticism with each other.
We were so touched by the movie "Fireproof." We just watched it for the first time together (I had seen it in theatres while husband watched our littles), but we had never seen it together. My dh just assumed it was one of those "chick-flicks"...
But we were profoundly touched. Though we have never had infidelity or impurity as a cross to bear like the characters did in the movie...we have often fought like they did...marriage has been very sanctifying for both of us. Before we were married, our spiritual director told us that because we were young when we were married, we would have to "grow-up" together, in a sense, and things would be hard for us. He also told us that, knowing our personalities, we would "love hard" and "fight hard". And we do.
With that being said, we feel very called to really focus on our marriage...during Lent and beyond...and so...my husband "slipped" and shyly admitted to me that he was going to do the "Love Dare" for the 40 days of Lent for our marriage...which I thought was really beautiful.
I don't know what I am going to do yet...I just thought I would post what he is going to do.
And to ask for prayers...we always need prayers.
Bless you all!!
Maggie

I just posted a section on Ash Wednesday from a Religion Teacher's Manual from 1945. It's a lot of food for thought, and can be read aloud to the children. Since the theme from the Holy Father is emphasis on fasting, I thought especially this part was spot on:
Quote:
On this day make a resolution to perform some act or acts of mortification every day during Lent. The following may be used for discussion:
(a) I can make my eyes "fast" by:
Not going to movies
Keeping them fixed on the altar or in prayer book when in church
Not looking around in school but studying faithfully
Not seeing the faults of others
(b) I can make my tongue "fast" by:
Not being saucy
Not replying angrily
Not talking in church
Not saying anything unkind to or another
Not excusing myself
Not blaming others
(c) I can make my ears "fast" by:
Not listening to unkind and uncharitable things said of others
Not being eager to hear myself praised
Not insisting on tuning in on my favorite radio program when some member of the family wishes to listen to something else. |

I am more prepared and ready than I have EVER been before, for Lent this year. I can say whole-heartedly, that I am very much looking forward to it. Our whole family is!
In that light, my list of what I am doing for Lent, is long, and partially personal. But as a whole, I will be focusing more on prayer, spent with Jesus in way of the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, as well as daily scripture readings and reflection. My sacrifices and focuses are numerous. Each one of us have our own prepared agendas, but as a family, we are adding a mass to our week. My little kids will be doing the Lenten Adventure
TV is not an issue in our home-it's not on often.
The computer is a big part of my work, but I suppose the visiting blogs and forums are not. (I find them so inspiring though!
I am an active blogger too. I didn't intend on limiting that, but with all those that I see here who will not be blog visiting through Lent, I might as well blog less! No one will be visiting!
Whatever you do, whatever you give....may this Lent be a time of deep reflection, prayer, penance, and growth in our relationship with Christ, for all of us.
