Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Jen - this is awesome. But you are going to have to talk me through this - my brain is just not figuring this out. I will have to show Abby to see if she can figure it out.

Thanks so much.

Okay....

talking you through it...

First, try it with a flat sheet - it's easier to rip if you mess it up. Also, a comforter would be waaaay too thick for this - you can only do this on a home sewing machine with a quilt.

So...

1. It might be helpful if you pull one mattress off a bed to do this so that the end hangs off the bed and is easier to work with or you can do like I did and just pull the mattress up and hang it over the end of the footboard of the bed...either way, it's easier to work with the end of the mattress if it is accessible.
2. Take your flat sheet/quilt and put it on the mattress upside down lining up the top of the sheet or quilt with the top of the mattress.
3. Using your hands smooth the end section flat over the end of the mattress.
4. Now, focus on one corner at a time. Using your hands bring the excess corner material together to a point. Don't pull too hard here. Just gently help the material into a corner/45 degree angle. Using pins, pin down in a straight line the corner of material so that your straight line of pins follows the line of the mattress straight down. You should have a triangle sticking out now. Don't worry that the two ends don't match up at the bottom - usually the end of the quilt or sheet will be longer than the sides - you're just going to tuck that under the bottom of the mattress when you're done anyway.
5. Remove the quilt from the bed being careful not to pull any pins out and walk straight to your machine.
6. Line up your quilt or sheet so that you are starting your stitching at the top of your triangle. Just follow your pins down in a straight line pulling pins as you go. Backstitch a couple of stitches to lock.
7. Repeat with the other corner.
8. Turn your sheet/quilt right side out now and try it on your mattress. Tuck the excess material from the bottom of the quilt/sheet under the bottom end of the mattress. You've created a pocket down there now and it won't budge until you pull it off.

Since the quilt is now fitted to the mattress there is no more angst figuring out if you've got enough quilt on one side or the other, you just pull it up to the top of the bed with one big *puff* the boys call it - a nice shake and the bed is made.

***One important note, Marilyn!! If you or Abby do this with your new bedding make sure you wash those quilts first before you sew pockets. I'd hate for you to do this and then wash a quilt and have it shrink!***

Hope this helps some, Marilyn! This is definitely do-able for Abby. Tell her to call me if she needs help, but it really is *super* easy! The hardest part is walking from bed to sewing machine and not getting stuck with a pin!

I moved my 3yo from a toddler bed to a bottom bunk and was happy to find that the toddler bed comforter lays flat from side to side and from the bottom of the mattress up to the bottom of the pillow so it is easy to make and looks neat. Also, since it's smaller and easy to wash, I'm willing to let him sleep under a comforter + extra blanket (kept folded at the bottom of the bed) if it's colder (although I insist that my girls in twin beds sleep between the sheets). He is little, though, and I'm not sure if the small comforter will provide enough "coverage" for an older child.

Bumping this thread....

I'm getting ready to sew up the new MATCHING quilts for my 2 youngest daughters bunk beds!!!!                     We painted both rooms a few weeks ago                                                            and separated the girls into two separate bedrooms!

And, since I have older girls now who can "make beds / change sheets"....we decided to graduate to "real sized quilts" with the pockets!!!!! My mom comes next week and I get caught up on my sewing when she's here.

How did the quilts come out, Suzanne?

You inspired me to take pictures of my last quilt work (which I just sewed up for my 3 year old) and post it as a tutorial with helpful pics. I can't help it - I think this is so brilliant for keeping quilts and bedding in place!!

Remember we talked about sewing the non-fitted flat sheets with boxed pockets, too? Did you do that? I'm hoping to work on my sheets soon! I have one son that somehow-someway completely removes the non-fitted sheet in his sleep....but his quilt stays in place! He must be a night-time-thrasher-abouter! His sheets will be first!

Fantastic!! We actually did ALL FIVE BEDS!!!! They turned out fantastic! All of them are bunks and it makes it easier to put on and keep straight and it looks so nice!

I have a picture on the camera of the MATCHING QUILTS!! Which....by the way...I NEVER thought I'd see the day. Just like I never thought I'd see the day when I had a child out of a car seat, or I never thought I'd see the day when I didn't have to unload groceries from the car.....I NEVER NEVER thought I'd see the day when we'd have MATCHING QUILTS! So, see.....all you mommies-with-littles???? There CAN BE matching quilts at the end of the rainbow!

Great great tutorial! I sent out a mass email this morning singing the praises of sewn-up-corners-for-children's-quilts!!! I'm sure everyone think me CRAZY!

Yes. Did all the sheets too! [/QUOTE]   So fun and easy!

Thanks for starting the thread, Marilyn!!   And for the idea, Jen! Sewn-up-quilt-corners are my new favorite thing .....next to my chardonnay, of course!

Sounds like you got this all figured out, but this post reminded me of what I used to do while I was VERY pregnant with my 6th baby....
Sleeping Bags!!!

I was so large I just couldn't climb up to the top bunk, (we had 2 sets ~ now it's three) so I just had the kids sleep in sleeping bags till I was back to my normal self.
