I talked this over with a few moms who use this. Some use the workbook, some didn't. Many used the original text as a jumping point. Like MicheleQ says above, it's very similar to Charlotte Mason's approach, so it's a wonderful way to see how it all fits.

But short answer, if you need or want to have material all planned for your dictation and copywork, then yes, buy the workbook.

But if you like to incorporate your own snippets from what you are learning within your own homeschool and are comfortable with presenting it, then the workbook is not necessary.
