Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We haven't watched this version ... but we're soooo enjoying the Adams Chronicles ... it's a great dramatization of the four generations of Adamses who impacted American life -- John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Charles Frances Adams (Minister to Great Britain on the eve of the Civil War) and Henry Adams (historian) and Charles Francis Adams the 2 who is an industrialist ...

The acting is great ... John and Abigail are portrayed wonderfully -- very much in love AND very honest with each other and lots of sarcasm and asides that are quite funny.

This mini-series played on PBS back in '76 and I can remember Mom watching it and really liking it. The littles and I are watching two episodes at a time -- about 90 minutes worth and there are a total of 4 discs.

Oh, yeah, Suzanne ...your timing would have been better by one day!

Imagine my shock last night when we watched the last episode!!

Due to the other things I had to have the kids avoid in other episodes...I figured out quickly and turned the sound down. Phew!

I was going to come here and add that to the "scenes to avoid for kids" list.

So, here is my opinion on the series. I was not thrilled with it. I hated this portrayal of John Adams. They spent so much effort on so many negative aspects of his life......when there was so much good and amazing things that he accomplished. Yes, I know he was generally considered "unliked and obnoxious"...I have seen "1776" the musical, often enough to know that

But...he was a wonderful thinker...a wonderful writer..a loved husband.....and yes, he made some mistakes......esp in parenting......but, can we give theguy a break all these years later?

not sure if I am coherent, it is late...but I think I would rather watch "An American Experience" about John than this.

So, there you have, my thoughts...well, only some of them, for what they are worth.

Oh, and my kids aged 7, 12, 13, 16, and 18 were unhappy with this movie as well......and they LOVE historical movies. The 18 yo quit watching after three episodes. And we only finsihed because we wanted to finish what we had started.

Glad you love the book, Suzanne! I am just to the part when Abigail goes to join her husband in France. Slow going.......I LOVE this book!

Thanks, mary for the recommendation...we will try that the next time we do John Adams.

Night!

That's interesting, Chari......my dad said almost the EXACT same things as you....well, MORE too....and with a few expletives thrown in      He knows quite a lot about the founding fathers, and is NEVER EVER happy with the movies.

I didn't get that from the movie, but perhaps because I didn't know IN THE FIRST PLACE the "rest of the story" or how great he was before seeing it.....ykwim?

..still loving Those Who Love. Interesting that it hasn't been republished recently.

Elena at Tea at Trianon had an interesting post about the book, and referenced the HBO series.

Oh, thank you for this!!! I cannot WAIT to have My Dearest Husband watch it.

The ending is hilarious -- how many times have I given that same request (paraphrased, of course).

Well, next time, you MUST say it that way

Well, I have stopped drinking it on a regular basis, so it will be more of "LONG for Pellegrino and lemon over ice."
