It honestly didn't hit me that TONIGHT is New Year's Eve until about 9:00 this morning. Dh went to work just like a regular day, and the kids and I ran errands. Once dd reminded me that today is the last day of 2008, we swung by Party City and bought some sparkly hats and noisemakers (as if we need help making noise!), then went to Trader Joe's and picked up several different kinds of appetizers/finger foods, a bottle of champagne and some juice for the kids. I'm baking brownies for dessert now. We'll watch some dvd's and play some games. DH is leaving for a trip tomorrow morning, so we will ring in the new year and then go off to bed.
That sappy Barry Manilow song keeps running through my head, "It's just another New Year's Eve, another night like all the rest. It's just another New Year's Eve, let's make it the best." I may have to pop the champagne early, just to make it stop!!

Thanks for the inspiration, Joann! We never did get to the sugar cookies before Christmas day.

We will have Italian subs made at home and snack food that we don't ususally eat. We'll make mock champagne (allrecipes) and have the real thing for me and dh. The house is decorated with streamers and we have noise makers decorating the table along with a pretty centerpiece of mistmatched candles. We'll play party music and dance...now that's a sight! Poker next then we'll have a movie night: Return of the Thinman...Devin found that it has New Year's theme. Closer to midnight we'll watch the local goings-on on TV...there is a huge party here connected to Bowl games in Tempe but we won't brave that public outing with young children:). We'll watch the ball drop in NYC somewhere along the line - not sure what time that happens here so I'd better figure that out pretty quickly!
I'm off to get dressed in something party pretty...something that swirls when I twirl .
Oh...does anyone else bang pots and pans outside their front door at midnight? We do!...our neighbors scratch their heads .
Happy New Year! Mary, Mother of God be with us!
Love,

For the past ten years we have celebrated with friends It started with three families and between us we rotate a Christmas party (usually the 20th) and New Year Eve's party. Our circle has grown and so have the number of children, generally speaking the parties range between 35-50+ Other friends have asked if they could host, we keep telling them 'sure' but so far no-one has.
To the children especially these parties speak TRADITION! Very important. My favourite memory is New Years Eve 2000, we partied together and then two families went to Mass at Midnight.
Last night was small, 38 big and little friends Happy New Year

I had hoped this would be the first New Year's in decades (I am 30!) that I was asleep at midnight. I mean, I'm not even asleep at midnight on a typical day. But I really needed a nap this afternoon/evening so that looks unlikely. Plus the boys are both still up right now and the 4-year-old had a late nap as well :( I guess "plans" are simply to watch the clock/TV for the change in year. I actually had a dream during my nap that we were awake (my husband, at least our 4-year-old, and I) but didn't notice until 1:25 a.m. that it was the New Year.

"swirl when you twirl" - oh, Ang, I liked that! It made me smile .
And we did the pots and pans banging growing up in NJ - but not out here in AZ or NV. Is it an east coast thing?

No plans here. We're going to bed before midnight. Tomorrow is a big day for us Penn State fans. First Rose Parade, then the Rose Bowl.

We're already home from the party at Annie's godfather's.
I have no intention of staying up until midnight...I'm feeling such the fuddy-dud... but Garrett has a friend over whom I will have to bring home before I can go to bed. They are outside around the fire right now.
So I thought it wild when I saw Mary G. mention this...

...because I checked out "Bleak House" from the library the other day and have been watching it the past two days. I'm just on DVD #2 but was headed to watch some more of it when I saw her post.
I'm loving it, Mary, and have committed myself to watching all BBC's Dickens and Austen and more through 2009.

I saw Mary's post too, we loved that version of David Copperfield, it had me feeling English for weeks!

Cay, my oldest daughter and I LOVED Bleak House a few months ago, we watched it three nights running, enjoyed it together like two giddy school girls!!
I tried to get dh to watch it, but no, he wasn't interested until we replayed it the other day and he got caught up in it accidently and was rivetted to the end..he'll just have to go back to the beginning and watch the first half, that's all!!
I'm watching Martin Chuzzelwit at present, bring on more BBC Dickens and Austens in the 2009!!

I started watching it by myself but will probably watch it again with my girls once school starts up again...and call it school.
I wasn't sure how "dark" it was but I think it's never too early to expose them to Dickens.

I watch it late at night in bed and dh has gotten caught up in some parts. But he always ends up falling asleep. Poor dear, he has to get up early in the mornings.

Yeah, we should all start a little viewing club.

It's a great idea because I ALWAYS walk away from Austen, but particularly Dickens, greatly affected, pondering the world, morals and characters, it really elevates my thoughts in general. God bless them both for the good they have spread!

Quiet day with the kids --
We made these, ate lasagna and garlic bread, whole wheat crackers and Costco artichoke heart/jalapeno dip, watched Jeeves and Wooster, and the boys are playing NCAA football on the XBox.
We had champagne and watched the New York glittering ball come down : ).
That's about it!

We probably need to move this to the lit posting ... but Dickens on BBC is amazing! I've got my 6, 8 and 9 yo kids begging for more!
We watched a bit of Pickwick Papers tonight and then did the first part of Martin Chuzzlewitt (sp?) ... they are sooooo good!

Anne... the funny thing is that I never could get "into" Dickens until I saw the BBC ones and then I pulled out the books again. Mom always read us Christmas Carol thru Advent ... but I never was enthralled (of course, I was a pretty rotten little kid !)
I think a video club would be great -- there are so many great dvd's out now that really spark the kids (and moms !)

Between losing power a few days ago, several other goofy things happening, and now it looks like chicken pox... I didn't make many plans. We did have party blowers and a toast at midnight.
Next year I plan on doing fireworks, I just have to remember to buy double at the 4th of the July. I also thought New Years Eve would be a great night to measure and weigh everyone and let the kids take all those silly face pictures they want to take.

We went to bed at 9, dh woke us all up just before midnight and we had a sparkling cider toast and went back to bed... We are still all pretty wiped out from that virus. Everyone else is off to mass in a few minutes, I am staying home with little Molly who is exhaused.
Bridget - Chicken pox?? Hmmmm, if it wasn't so close to baby time I'd make the trip up to steal some from ya! Hope you get some rest mama. & nbsp;

This was the first time in years we were up at midnight. I'm not a fan of champagne, but Bill bought the makings of mimosas. YUM! So we sat side by side on the couch and watch "The Office" on the laptop (from Netflix) until just before midnight when Bill wanted to see the ball drop. We were both so sad to see Dick Clark.
Jan 1 is Maria's birthday, so the real party is today.

Hubby and I did our annual tradition of getting all the kids in bed around 10pm. Have a babysitter come over and head out to Mass and Adoration at a monestary near by. Wonderful to spend time with the two loves of your life while ringing in the new year.
We did have a great dinner with another homeschooling family and a priest too! and lots of "kid wine" sparkling apple cider for kids to toast.
