My 11.75 yr old is wearing a long velour skirt with matching top.. lace sleeves.

But we got it as hand me down.

Next daughter down again handme down.. velour (velvet?) soft stretchy jumper with silky top under.

Next.. a velvet-type tiered skirt from walmart 2? years ago with a pretty top from there this year.

Dd12 is wearing a Dirndl from Germany. It is a hand me down and looks very festive. The main dress part is blue with little white flowers printed on it, the apron is a burgundy red color, white dirndl blouse and a black velvet jacket. I am so thankful to have this, because I am having the same trouble finding dresses for her. She can no longer wear size 16girls, and must wear women's size small.

What size does your dd wear?

I hit the Hanna Anderson dress sale in early November. Mary Beth is wearing her dress in my blog banner photo.

Ditto Hanna Anderson. My 11 year old is wearing a pretty red dress that I got at a great clearance price last year.

Target has a bunch of dresses on sale right now that might work.

Three cheers for Hanna Andersson! My 11yo is also wearing a dress bought during the November sale (it took five weeks to get here but...). She is tall and wearing a women's size s/m these days but she also fits the Hanna size 160 fortunately. We got the Milano black & white sweater dress at a big discount! She loves black and white.

I just finished sewing my dd's this evening. It is a very traditional Christmas dress: red, green and gold plaid skirt with a black velvet top. The skirt is a full circle skirt and it is a nice flippy material. I hope she will love it. My dd is only 9, but is at the just pre-puberty stage and getting too curvey for the children's department.

Sigh...my 12 yr old has outgrown Hannah's and Lands End both. At this point, the only outfit she has for mass that fits is a nice pair of black pants. NOT my idea of good mass attire, Christmas or not, but I'm stumped how to fix it. Let me know if you come up with anything, Molly.

We haven't figured it out yet, either.

This may sound silly, but for *me*, I find it usually comes down to the shoes! These days, she wears Black BearPaws(a little like Uggs-w/othe hefty price) with leggings, skirt, and long sweater. She is not a dress girl. And if you wear a dress, you need the right shoe-and there is the problem. She wears Ladies sizes, and I can't find a pair w/o a heel. Ugh, for me, I am not ready for her to wear a shoe with a heel.

As much as I dislike the...atmosphere, I think we will check out Limited Too,as my mom bought dd some basics there, and passed on to me, coupons good all of December.

How about a shoe thread?

Modest Clothing Directory is a place with a lot of on-line "modest" clothing stores.

I have shopped at a few of them for myself (love Junee's) , but not for girls. However, I just did a quick search and Hanna Lise seemed to have have some practical options. I am sure there are others if you check out the Girl's section.

Oh isn't it frustrating! My 14yo dd fits in small ladies sizes but there was nothing "nice" even for adults that I could find - any skirts we found were either too short or too "old lady" looking (plaids, herringbone patterns).

I was lucky that a friend passed down a wool merino dress that I added a bit of ribbon to - I have a picture here.

My younger dd who is 12 will be wearing a pleated wool plaid skirt - (this dd does not seem to equate plaids with either old ladies or Scottish kilts) and knit red top with a bit of embriodary on the edging. The skirt was a thrift find.

Life was so much easier when they still fit in April Cornell.

I like the April Cornell! I have never heard of it before. I ditto the feelings on the shoes. My daughters do have black penny loafers that they can wear with pretty much everything. They are ladies sizes - not super fashionable. I have found them at Kohls.

I sewed a floor length black circle skirt for my 11 yo dd for a harp concert over the weekend. She loved it! It was so easy and I think I am going to sew one for my 13 yo dd for this weekend as she is singing at a wedding. I didn't even use a pattern - just a tutorial I found on the web. If you have minimal sewing skills you could do this skirt in about 2 hours.

I found a beautiful dress for DD age 9 at Costco and one to match for baby Josie. I grabbed them back in Sept - I don't know what the pickins are on the bigger sizes now.

We have a Strasburg outlet about an hour from here - but even the outlet prices are a little steep. But, they are beautiful.

Mary

My 12yo is wearing a blue velvet dress she picked up at a thrift store. It's so hard to find decent, inexpensive church clothing for this age! I have had luck lately hitting the ladies section...it doesn't work with pants or even most tops as my daughter is rather small framed on top, but we've had good luck finding skirts for her this way. She wears a 14 girls, but we've made small, or size 4-6, womens work, especially if it has an elastic waist.

Okay, I have to ask I think I may have hit a cultural thing here. Are you all referring to Church on Christmas Day or for Christmas Dinner? Do all or many Americans buy a new outfit for Christmas Mass if I've worked this out correctly? I'm always so fascinated by the cultural experiences shared here

We usually buy new dresses for Easter and Christmas, both to wear to Mass and for the dinner after. With three girls, some times they hand down dresses, but my oldest, she usually gets something new. It's also fun to coordinate their outfits, but that gets harder as the oldest graduates from the girls' department to juniors. Because what we all really like is a nice color-coordinated family photo at Christmastime, whether with Santa at the mall or in front of the tree at home. I suppose you Australians don't go in much for matching velvet and plaid taffeta dresses in the middle of summer? Fancy shorts sets?

hehe...me too. It's funny how I seem to assume that countries that share a language just share everything else. I'm also kind of surprised when differences pop up.

We do usually get the kids new outfits for Easter and Christmas mass. Dinner is usually more casual for us, and in fact on Christmas we go to mass on Christmas Eve so dinner is a whole different day altogether. Their new outfits, for us, are not necessarily *new*...I do love my thrift stores.    And for the boys, who usually already have all the church pants they need at this point, will just get a new shirt or sweater.

When my oldest was little, I used to live in a very small town with no place to shop for miles except a Walmart. On Easter morning, half the children in mass had the exact same dress on. My favorite part about shopping at thrift stores was that it was the only way to find something different!

Usually, the girls wear hand-me-down dresses, just very pretty ones to highlight how special the event is. Some years I buy new. Costco had some beautiful, inexpensive dresses this year for my little girls to match. I was able to find a similar one on ebay for my 9 yr old.

DD12 is just so in-between right now! She doesn't fit in a size 14, but a 16 swims on her. We haven't had luck with petites, yet. She is also in-between as far as style. She doesn't want to wear a fluffy Bonnie Jean dress anymore    , but she certainly doesn't want to wear what is offered for "tweens" and teens. She is a tomboy which makes the whole process harder. If I could find her dressy pants and a pretty shirt, I would probably let her wear that.

I will probably hit the mall this week with her to find something. I have learned my lesson about mail order shopping for this child.

Thanks for all the input!

Marianna is going to wear the skirt we picked up for All Saints Day actually. She removed the icicles she worked so hard at sewing on the hem and we'll just top it off with a black tee probably. If we could find one with a bit of velvety edging that would be ideal as all the black in the skirt is velvety. We found it at Ross, one of our only clothing store options here. (KMart and Sears are the others )

As for shoes, I love all the fun and different flats in the stores right now. The shoes you see in her picture are actually mine - black velvet with patent leather tips and heels.
