Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK - here I go. 70 day and night and I am still freezing. Thank goodness our house is on the smaller side - hopefully our bills are not going to kill us. But it is not a choice - I cannot handle being cold - I tried 65 - i go into shutdown mode and cannot function at all despite layers and layers of clothing. Dh has been doing some draft proofing which is improving things.

Any other "closet 70 degree-ers" out there?

Me too!
I TRY to keep our heat at 65 during the day and 60 at night -- usually ends up being more like 67 and 63. Our heating bill is high even with the heat that low.
My girls' room gets SO cold as they are farthest away from the furnance and my husband doesn't think the heat ducts are insulated, so the "hot air" coming out in their room vents is lukewarm! They don't keep their blankets on at night . . . and well, I can't stand to let them sleep cold.
Our house is SO bad!   I feel fresh cold air wiffs all the time, the closets are icy and even the kitchen cabinets let out blasts of cold air when opened!

At night the thermostat is set at 55, and still most of the boys hardly wear anything-- The littles wear fuzzy sleepers with undershirts, and the girls usually a t-shirt and shorts. I then turn the heat off

WOW! That's awesome! The power of body heat.

I gave up! 63 was just to cold and crabby! Plus, no one wanted to come to our house. We moved it up to 67 and I feel a difference. As it warms up some, I'll turn the temp back down.

How are you doing?

Well, DH has insisted on it being raised. To 70 plus. The boys bdrm gets frigid at night. They won't stay under blankets....

So the thermostat is up, but fortunately, our heater is propane...our bills have been under $150/month for the last 3.

I am going to sound like *such* a wimp! I know so many of you are where it is really cold and snowing and miserable. (hey, it *did* snow here, tho, right?)

I am freezing.

We have our temp set at 62. And all the floors in the house are tile, and the tiles are cold! I wear my super-cushy heavy bathrobe like all. the. time.! It gets *cold* here compared to Arizona! I had no idea. We are all freezing. We all only owned like one or two long sleeve shirts. I will be buying more on clearance! bbbbbrrrrrrrrr.......

Our heat kicks off at night usually.

Usually not during the day, but I think that is cuz the sensor is right by the laundry room.

We are all freezing. My dd19 came home from Kansas for her first real break and kept saying, "I thought it was going to be warm!" Yes, it is warmer than Kansas....but us desert dwellers are srsly not adjusted!

I took the thermostat down to 63 today, after receiving an email notice of a $400 gas bill coming my way...

We're at 65/66 most of the time - that's the max heat we can get before (expensive) auxiliary heat kicks in...we're building a lot of fires, though, so I am not so sure how much we are saving overall. I should know better in the next week or so.

If we had a fireplace I wouldn't mind the cold. Our fireplace is gas, it doesn't really do much to heat the house. And, I think it smells. Dh turned the pilot light in there off. I hope one day we can replace it with a pellet stove.

We keep ours at 65 during the day and 60 at night. I am cold, but I just bundle up in layers. When it got really cold last week, we actually turned the heat down because the auxillary heat was kicking on and we knew that the bill would reflect that. We have noticed a difference in our usage versus last year. But without being able to compare the temps, I can't be sure how much we are saving.

We do have a gas fireplace, but I want to save the propane in case we have any problem with the heat pump like we did last year. A couple of mornings, we have turned it on just to take the chill out of the air.

We're at 66 during the day when we're up, 62 at night. With 3 heating zones, we also are able to put the less-occupied areas of the house (the upstairs bedrooms) to 64 during the day. We have a gas fireplace in the family room, where we spend the most time. That room is very drafty, with a high, high ceiling, one wall all windows, and the draft coming down the chimney. Everyone in there is always covered with blankets. When I get too chilled, I heat up my *neck and shoulder wrap* in the microwave and wear it under a wool shawl. So cozy!

Peace,
Nancy

We had tried to do a modified Joann with kicking the heat up to 65 for a couple hours first thing in the morning but down to 58 the rest of the day and through the night. Its okay when your active, but if you get still, you get cold.

I've had some monster headaches recently, and I become a big baby cranking the heat up, but I must admit, after a couple of weeks with it being below 65, 65 feels quite warm and 68 is downright toasty.

My dream is to have a fireplace or woodburning stove some day. It seems to make sense to have a central place that is cozy and warm but the other rooms are cool. That way when one is working and warm from activity it is comfy, but there is a place to go warm up or snuggle down for more passive activities like reading and handcrafts.

Burning wood...so temp is hard to control. On really cold days it's 66 but when it gets warmer out, it can get up to 80 (!) but we're usually around 70-72. My dh did some modifications to the ductwork / air handling between the first and second story and we are heating our house a lot more evenly for a lot less $$ this year. (We also re-sided, so our house is wrapped up tight with new Tyvek).

Maybe this needs to go to a new thread, but I've been wondering how our electric use compares to others who are trying to conserve energy/money. Comparing Jan 08 to Jan 09, our consumption dropped from 2075kwh to 1282kwh, (heating 2200 sq ft with an avg high 32/30 and temp low of 14/12 - slightly colder this year + 3 more billing days in this year's cycle) and we're keeping the house warmer than we did last year!

Last year we kept our thermostat at 65 during the day and 69 at night. Our kWh consumption for last January was 2,601. Our bill was about $295.00.

This yeat my MIL is living with us. We HAVE to to keep the temp at 69 during the day and 68 at night, and even then, she walks around with a coat on. Our kWh consumption this January was 4038 and our bill was $478.00

She is moving to the basement as we speak, or write , and she has a woodstove. She has it on now and will keep it going, so now I can go back to lowering our thermostat.

I'm freezing.

I live with a Gas-Usage Control Freak (my dh). It is 63 F (he thinks...when he goes to work I might accidently nudge it up to 65 F) during the day and 60 F at night.

The kids don't even seem to notice. They run around all the time so maybe they just heat themselves up. Me? Well, I'm about to turn to ice.

Just yesterday, my husband reached over to hold my hand and was like, "YOUR HANDS are FREEZING". Umm...duh. I've told him for months that I'm too cold. So he gets up and I think, "YIPPEE, he's going to turn up the heat." No. He hands me a pair of gloves. LOL LOL LOL.

I literally laughed for hours about that. Men!

Vanna -
Don't tell your dh, but I have a pair of "reading gloves". The kind that have a flip-off part that switches a mitten into a glove with exposed fingertips. I wear these when reading in bed in my 62 degree bedroom.Being able to enjoy a good book outweighs the ridiculous picture I make!

Peace,
Nancy

That is too funny. What a guy. We keep it cool here, 58 at night and 66 during the day. Our upstairs is poorly insulated so it's colder up there. It' doesn't bother me much right now, I have my own little furnace. The little kids don't notice, they won't even keep socks on. The big ones curl up under blankets to do their school work.
