I went out today to Party Co (to get our New Year celebration stuff ), Toys R Us, and Joann Fabrics. Here's my observation -- not too much restocking, not great stuff, and not large crowds. I know I wasn't in malls nor in large stores (except the Toys one), but I was really surprised.

OK, so you all who do black Friday regularly, was it as busy as usual in your area? I'm just curious, with the economy and all... |

This was our first time black friday shopping but it didnt seem so bad. Walmart was pretty packed. By the time we got to to Target(8am), it wasnt packed at all. Same with JC Penneys and Kohls. Well, Kohls was busy but not packed.

We ventured out. DH had just gotten off work so we left everyone but the baby here with Grandma. Target was absolutely crazy. We got there 10 minutes after it opened and there were lines everywhere already to check out. I don't know how people did that in just 10 minutes. We found a few things but nothing worth getting up at 5:00 in the morning for. I did get most of my Christmas shopping done-which is great but I can't say I saved a bunch of money.
I don't think I'll be doing that again anytime soon. I would much rather shop online and have it delivered to my house.
Although I have to agree it didn't look like much of a recession here in WY!

The one store we tried to go to (other than Trader Joe's) on "Black Friday" was closed! It's a local consignment shop that when we go almost always has the same one worker (I think she's the owner) there. I had thought about calling but figured it would be open on this legendary shopping day, but we drove there to find a sign saying closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving. We needed more warm clothes for the kids, especially the baby who's growing out of size 0-3 months, so we went back the next day.

I noticed less busy-ness.
I went to a mall in Winchester, Va on Saturday. It was full -- but normal Saturday full, not Thanksgiving weekend full. The roads weren't that traffiky either, just your average Saturday . . .

I hate shopping with a passion, but dd birthday falls around the big shopping day every year. She is a crowd person, loves to shop and browse and I've gone with her for the last 3 years. I smile, get more exercise walking than ever before and try to make sure I don't say anything about how much I hate shopping . I don't like to shop even on normal days.
Of course, we don't push ourself for early AM now that she is in college - so getting there at 11 or so means crowds are pretty much down. I didn't see any lines here - well, unless you count the overpriced food at the food court that took over an hour to cook - but then again, I don't think we saw anything worth buying anyways! Guess there were more folks than I thought, just they were all taking a food break when we were browsing.
I'm not a good judge of crowds or such as I honestly don't shop normally - unless it is at Friends of the Library. (We get lots of hand me downs from relatives and neighbors).

I went last year at 2 AM to stand in line at Sam's for a Wii! Ugh! It was FREEZING. I was about 4th in line so I knew I would get one. At about 4 AM hundreds of people showed up at the same time. They were all jocking for position. Pushing, shoving, arguing. It was crazy. Reading that Walmart story makes me think that it could have gotten much worse. Scary.
This year I put my son's PS3 on layaway at Kmart in October. LOL I was NOT dealing with any of that craziness again.

These are the results I found online:
The National Retail Federation said more than 172 million shoppers visited stores and Web sites over Black Friday weekend - Thursday through Sunday - up from 147 million shoppers last year.
Shoppers spent an average of $372.57 last weekend.
That's an increase of 7.2 percent over last year's $347.55. Total spending reached an estimated $41 billion, up from $34.6 billion a year ago.
