From LTP
please scroll down almost to the bottom.
Fling wide the doors
scroll down even further and see the Lenten calendar.
This looks very interesting...and the price is right. Has anyone actually seen this irl? Or heard about it?

Stephanie -- I was going to post about this one too! It looks so cool ... and since I need the Wheel Calendar anyway ... well, I'm ordering!

I was going to post about it, too. I've got my cart filled up with my calendars and liturgical wheel and thought the same thing. I was also going for the Bethlehem and Lent things, too, since they are on sale. Opening little doors daily is always a big hit here.

We have it and the dc like it we have reused it a couple of times.
But a caveat one of the pictures is of Adam and Eve and they are ahem..quite lacking in fig leaves of any sort .
We added 2 tiny leaf stickers to ours before giving it to the dc. Adam was a bit more detailed than I was ready for giving the age of my dc at the time .
Otherwise a very pretty calendae esp with a candle inside. we have the large sized one but I bet an electric tea light would work in the smaller version.

Thanks for the caveat, Maggie. I presume the more expensive "family size" is the bigger one? I couldn't find dimensions for the second one.

Oh, I am on an Adevent ordering roll...and a history one...and a science one...I might have to claim school supplies as my Christmas gift this year! We have so many daily advent things, but the kids cannot seem to get enough and that one just looks so pretty...and I'm ordering my wheel anyway...

FYI - LTP is having problems with American Express card orders. I just burned up some of my cell phone minutes getting that straightened out! AMEX won't work online (another error code today!) but they will gladly take your order on the phone.
Can't wait for my order to show!

I wish I had seen this thread before I just got the shock of my life looking at the pictures on the LTP calendar. Whoa!!! I know my kids would not be happy with that picture of Adam and Eve sans fig leaves. There was almost as much detail about human anatomy as NASA sent into space with the Pioneer spacecraft.
I have to admit that I was looking around because I was a little surprised to see Rosa Parks on the picture for tonight. I certainly understand Rosa Parks' connection to the concept of justice, but was a little surprised to see her in stained glass likeness in the calendar. Out of curiosity, I started to look at the other pictures coming up and saw the one for tomorrow (Maura, Jean, Ita and Dorothy, murdered in El Salvador, 1980). When I looked into the history behind this picture, I was kind of shocked by the political nature of the story. Like Rosa Parks, I understand the message that these pictures represent but I would expect that a religious advent calendar would have religious figures, not political ones. To be fair, of the four women mentioned, three of them were sisters who went to El Salvador to help the poor, but everything that I found online that discussed the tragedy was coming from a very political point of view.
Sorry to rant. I was just surprised. I am going to go hunt for leaf shaped stickers now.

I need to cover Adam and Eve, I forgot!
I was a bit surprised by Rosa Parks, but admit I didn't look ahead to see if there were others. Thanks for the heads up. I was so excited that this was the perfect calendar -- Sundays of Advent, saints days, days into the Christmas season...I was being completely wowed and then was just deflated by today's window. I'm not against learning about her, nor recognizing her achievements, but I don't think she fits in my Advent calendar.
Would I recommend this to others? Yes, I do like it, just with those caveats.

Charlotte, I am so sorry that you were surprised like that. I did read through the posts and was prepared for Adam au naturelle(sp?).
Thankfully, the smaller version has the fig leaves printed on the essential parts.
Regarding the "political" nature of some entries...I was also surprised by the Rosa Parks entry today, but after considering it I want to believe that this entry and others are trying to bring these virtues into our "today" present reality. This text today certainly jolted my dd12's imagination in a way that an Isaiah text alone just doesn't. I haven't read ahead, but I think that there is a biblical text given on each day as well.

Stephanie,
Like Jenn, I am not saying that historical or political figures have no place in explaining a virtue or scriptural lesson. But everything is a choice. Why cover Adam in the smaller version only to leave both him and Eve completely uncovered in the larger version? Why would the creators of this calendar choose (by my count) only 3 modern day examples. If their desire was to use modern examples of biblical references then why aren't all of the windows done in this fashion or at least a more balanced number of them? Since they chose saints or biblical figures for every other window, why not those three (Rosa Parks, 4 women slain in El Salvador and a future one that represents the massacre at Wounded knee) as well? If St. Andrew was appropriate to grace the window for yesterday, why not St. Edmund Campion today and St. Bibiana tomorrow?
While it is still something I can work with here at home, the "deflation" that Jenn described was pretty palpable over here. It reminded me of a Catholic school Mass that once used the writings of Martin Luther King Jr. in place of the readings at Mass. The message might have been appropriate for the day but not the occasion.

I haven't seen this particular Advent calendar, but I'm not surprised. I do love the liturgical wheel calendar that they produce particularly because it really is one of the only ones like it out there on a consistent basis every year - that being said, I generally am wary of other purchased from LTP, just because they do tend to have a progressive, social justice-y, focus. Social justice is an important component of our call as Christians, but you all know what I mean - it can be done in a way that promotes a different focus/agenda.

Can I also just say that I find it obnoxious that the window representing the Massacre at Wounded Knee is on the Feast of the Holy Innocents? It looks like I am going to have to do some doctoring to make this something I am comfortable with!

Whoops. I take that back. It is the day after which should be St. Thomas Becket's Feast Day.

I'm trying to decide how to do some doctoring myself. I'm a natural born tweaker in everything, so why not my Advent calendar?

Jenn,
I have some left over transparent vellum paper. I am printing some new pictures on that in order to cut out the old ones and tape the new ones in. The colors are as vivid as the pictures that are there, but I am OK with that.

I guess I better take a closer look at all the windows and texts real soon.
I also bought the Noah's ark calendar for lent for a friend in Germany as well. It would be really nice to be able to count on something being just right instead of having to doctor around......I just don't know when I am going to get to all of this.

I have a Word file with 5 alternative pictures. They are:
St. Edmund Campion (Dec. 1)
St. Bibiana (Dec. 2)
Holy Family (for Dec. 28th since it is on a Sunday it is Holy Family Sunday this year)
Holy Innocents (for Dec. 29th. Just moved over one day to allow for Holy Family Sunday)
and a clothed Adam and Eve for Dec. 24th.
If you want a copy to print out on vellum just pm me with you email address. All pictures have been sized to fit their respective spaces on the large sized calendar. Transparent vellum can be found in the scrapbooking section of most stores. I think I got mine at Walmart. Hope that makes tweaking this thing easier. I suggest you cut out the picures with a mat knife or utility knife and then just tape the new ones in.
