Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My girls are sticklers for modesty, yet they LOVE The Court Jester and White Christmas! I am not even sure if they mentioned anything about the clothing. If they did, I would have just remarked that it was indicative of clothing styles for the particular time frame.

A lot of great older movies actually have some pretty revealing clothing. There are certainly scenes that make me cringe a little. It's hard because I don't want to reject the whole thing because of one or two revealing outfits.

I am a big fan of old musicals! Great lists so far!!

If you love Bing and Frank, check out this lesser-known musical made in 1956: High Society. I love how beautiful Grace Kelly is and the clothes that she wears--oooh la la....gorgeous! It was my FAVORITE musical before I had kiddos (I would need to re-watch it to check as I remember a bit of mild innuendo, etc.). It is a musical based on The Philadelphia Story (another great film!).

I love the humor in this film and my favorite song is-- "True Love."

What a fun thread, Leonie!

High Society wouldn't be a good idea for children who are sensitive to the topic of divorce. (My parents are divorced and so my kids get very upset anytime characters are divorced.) I was also going to let you know that Danny Kaye's Hans Christian Anderson is on Hulu right now so you can watch it for free online with minimal commercial interruptions.

We love High Society (and the Philadelphia Story)! At least the divorced characters end up back together. (oops, did I spoil it? )

I am actually surprised how lightly divorce is handled in some of those old movies. All very nonchalant and matter-of-fact.

I love Camelot.

I got to see Robert Goulet play the King at a production in Buffalo in the early 90's. DH & I went to see it last year at a production in Phoenix.

I have the original w/Robert Goulet as Lancelot on DVD. I own the soundtrack.

Probably helps that one of my favorite books is The Once and Future King by TH White.

Also love The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady. But Camelot trumps all in my book.

My kids love Jon English' Pirates of Penzance. It's a bit of a take off of the original but the dc are mesmerized for 3 hours. Very funny, very well done. Fantastic acting and we love the music.

We grew up on old movies and musicals, and I have loved reminiscing with this list!

I always enjoyed Katherine Grayson and the roles she did, and the one I enjoyed was "The Desert Song." It does have one of "those" dances in the middle, as well as a killing scene, which I knew to look away from. But, I always wanted to sing like her!

My mother enjoyed "Naughty Marietta" - Jeannette McDonald and Nelson Eddy. And I wanted to sing like her too! Those two were a good match.

We did a lot of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies too. Some were just so silly, but so enjoyable.

I will have to do some more thinking. What a great thread!

I just picked up 3 VHS tapes for $3 at the library--The Mikado, Pirates of Penzance and ????. The kids are LOVING the Mikado. It's a Canadian cast, and I believe there are Canadian political references for those who would get those jokes.....

We love musicals in this house! As a teen my mother took me to all the local musicals as she co-ordinated a group for attending them together. There are so many listed here as examples but I would tend to caution about "remakes" because sadly I've found many have added sexual content involved or pokes and jabs at other things including Catholic slurs. This was clearly evident when we attended some of the great live Shakespeare plays on the westcoast, not musicals of course, but right up there with due caution.

If your children are young, take a movie only as far as you want it to go if that is a benefit to your family. For instance in the Sound of Music, for many years with our youngest children, we always ended the movie at the wedding. As they aged we added the extra footage when we felt they understood it. Revealing clothing? Hmmm...sometimes it's the time period but there's an opportune moment afterwards to speak about modesty perhaps.

Okay, have to confess, my very favorite musical is "Singing in the rain". We took six of our children to a live version and it was a fabulous play! The biggest bonus and memory for us was exiting the theatre to pouring rain. Our vehicle was in a parkade several blocks away. As a tribute to the live play, we found all the biggest puddles all the way to the van, splashing and singing our hearts! Other people on the crowded street joined in and some followed suit with us. Ahhhh....now that's a memory!'' But man, oh man, were we EVER wet!

I think my Favourite Musical is 'Sound of Music,' But in recent times it would be 'Phantom of the Opera'.

I loved 'Evita' and 'Jesus Christ Superstar' growing up.

I remember seeing Fiddler on the roof , with my parents at the drive-in! I liked it, want I understood.

I love musicals too. I just saw a really interesting one that wouldn't be appropriate for young children, but adults may enjoy. It's called Across the Universe. There are drinking scenes, drugs, etc. It's set in America during the Vietnam War protests, etc. (sorry, i'm nursing) It's all great Beatles tunes. If you hate the Beatles, you better pass.

I don't think that anyone mentioned Annie. It's an overall positive and uplifting story, the music is a lot of fun, and as a bonus, it's a gentle introduction to the Great Depression.

The Sound of Music is my favorite, I think. I've always enjoyed it, but appreciate it now more than ever.

I fell in love with Gene Kelly while watching Brigadoon, though he was a LOT older than me.

LOVE them all......Music Man is my favorite, along with Singing in the Rain, and The Sound of Music, and Fiddler on the Roof, and ...well on and on.....

I watched "Phantom of the Opera" recently, and found it drew me in and stuck with me so much, I checked it out and watched it again after a month or so. Something about that story gets to me . . .

My husband loves "Moulin Rouge."

My all time favorite is probably Mary Poppins, however. Even as an adult!

My all time favorite is The Sound of Music. My older four girls just finished acting in a community theater production of it. My five year old absolutely loves it too. She can quote large sections of it!

Other favorites of mine:

Annie
Brigadoon
The Music Man
The King and I
Fiddler on the Roof
My Fair Lady
Mary Poppins
Meet Me in St. Louis
And, yes, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers!

I'm bumping this because...

This is a fun topic and I can't believe this topic is 3 years old. Seems like yesterday!

And, I'm writing a music appreciation course for my high school sophomore and am including a focus on musicals . Ha, this is one way to get to watch them .

Please add your favorites if you missed this topic first time around. Thanks!

Love,
