We in the State of IL have NO regulations governing us as homeschoolers. We are not counted, no testing, checking in with school disctrict, etc. We are totally free agents.
I am going to be hopping mad in this land of Obama if come 2009 things start tightening up for us.....

Lisa, you certainly are brave. Honestly, I probably would caved. I'm a wimp, probably don't know enough about my rights, and ALWAYS seem to mess up under pressure.  You and your family have my prayers.
Your thread and the election results have spurred me to talk to my DH about joining HSLDA. (A financial challenge since our suburban engine blew yesterday.)

Good for you, Lisa! I know I'd have been shaking the whole time. We've run into people like that before.
Unfortunately, I think we may begin to see more of that with our new administration. We're going to all have to pull together for support. This is the first time in 10+ years of homeschooling that I have even entertained the idea of joining HSLDA, or other legal defense group.
I'd like to see other faiths represented on HSLDA's board... But I digress...
I'm praying fervently for you, and for God's protection around your home and family.

That's the thing, they were in their rights to respond to the "anonymous" call, but once they saw the dog was confined and tagged and not suffering that should have been that! You were awesome to stand up the way you did. And the comments about your homeschooling were completely inappropriate.
You've been a vicitm of the "Ohio Syndrome." Usually the party line is "that's not MY job" but on the rare occasion when someone is trying to do their job and thinks they have some authority, woe to the person who questions that authority in any way!
Good for you and hopefully this will pass soon, as I'm sure you're not that interested in a hassle from "the man".

Prayers going your way, thank you for standing up to what is the best for your and our children..After Jan. 20 many things will be "different" ( I am so tired of the word 'change') and we really have to stay alert to what will happen to our families. Yay for you!!

Thank you everyone. It really means alot knowing that so many understand why I didn't give in.
There were a few very strange things about the whole incident - the dog warden never told me why they were here - just that a neighbor called them and they demanded to see that the dog was registered (she had the papers in her hands!!) confined (she could clearly see her through the front door) and healthy. That is where I drew the line really, what if she wasn't, or what if the warden determined that she wasn't? (she is 14 years old ya know!)
We live in a city where the average police response time is 2 hours, that police officer was at my front door in just under 15 minutes - I am not an intimidating person. Those two women from the dog wardens office were, um, let's just say 'substantial'. I am 5 foot 2 inches and 7 months pregnant - clearly not a threat to anyone!
Then when it all turned to homeschooling, my suspicions were confirmed - that it really had little to do with the dog and more to do with them overstepping their bounds.
Funny thing is, I called it all to an end. I calmly looked at the warden and said "I think you have all the information you came for, we are done here." I then turned around and walked into my house - locking the door behind me. And they left. It was all so odd.
HSLDA is drawing up a formal complaint to the Chief of Police. We will give it the final 'okay' before they send it on. Also, our house will be going back up on the market after Greta is born. I can't handle this environment anymore.
At andy rate, my dear husband is getting a kick out of belting out that he and Mrs. Jones have a 'thing' going on! ;)
