I've actually asked a doctor friend about that before (she had a serious wanderer). But....since 3 yos don't have fur, the shock is too strong.
Sometimes when I go out, I do use a leash with James simply because it is the only way to keep him safe. Some people hate it, I know, but there have been times (think 2 year old twins) when I've needed it and have been grateful to have it.

I "lost" my oldest as a 2.5 yr old in an apartment.. I knew she had to be inside.. second story, all windows shut, high lock on the door.. but I could not find her and she would not answer.. I was finally down to lifting up anything anywhere regardless of it looking like it could be hiding her.. and finally found her.. sound asleep under a scarf(one of the big square silky ones, not a winter one).. I have no idea how she laid that scarf out over herself so that it was laying fairly smooth.. but that's what happened and you couldn't tell she was there until I moved the scarf. |

I lost my two year old the other night. She had been lying in bed with me while I put the baby to sleep. She wandered out and I thought she would go to my dh who was working downstairs.
When I finally got up to look for her, she wasn't with dh. He hadn't seen her. I checked her bed and all the other kids' beds. I checked the bathrooms. I didn't panic as I may have during the day because there was no where for her to go.
I finally found her, asleep, in her sister's closet. The light was on so I guess she figured it was a safe and comfy (read: clothes on floor!) place to sack out!

See... these are things that are good to know!

That is what totally gets me. HOW did he stay there so long? While my dh was not surprised at all (you have to know Michael), I just thought he would get bored! He did allude that he won't play the game anymore this morning... but I don't know if he's using words that I used.
He and I nap together, say the rosary together in his bed, and he is by far my most devout child. He chants everything and constantly talks about Mary and Jesus. So... I'm hoping that will make his stubborness a virtue for God.
And a night time wanderer has to be scary. I reacted badly during the day, I can't imagine how I would react at night with no sleep! I really think that the biggest part of my problem was that I was too ready to jump to the worst conclusion -- although under the circumstances I won't beat myself up for that too much right now.

And Red.. I totally didn't know they made such a thing. That really is worth looking into -- especially with my little crowd.
