Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Quick! I'm compiling a list of famous Catholic homeschoolers, including saints, particularly Spanish saints! Any suggestions?? I posted on Living Faith, too, so forgive the cross posting...

Thanks, Kelly in FL

Kelly,
With saints before a certain time period wouldn't we assume they were all "home schooled" at least until advanced education. One that I specifically read about this week for another reason but found a reference to being "home tutored" is Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati.

Also you often see depictions of St. Anne teaching the Blessed Mother to read. Obviously she would be considered homeschooled.

Well, yes, and no. Didn't Thomas Aquinas receive his education with the Benedictines? And St. Teresa of Avila mentions being corrupted by the romantic novels popular among her girlhood friends? I guess I'm concerned that quite a few of the saints may have been educated in monasteries. I can research it, of course, but I'm in a time crunch for this information! Aaagh.

As for Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, that's one for the list, thanks. I also thought about Pope Pius X. OK, I just thought of two more: Pierre Curie, and Blaise Pacale.

But what about more recent folk?

I guess I wasn't really thinking - I always sort of assume that any who went to monastaries did that as teens. I realize that could easily have been their first education as many families would not have been literate depending on the time period.

So, here's another one:St Elizabeth Ann Seton

St. Theresa (Little Flower) was definitely schooled at home except for the year she prepared for her First Holy Communion. She and Celine were taught by an older sister. The older sisters went to a convent school where their Aunt was a nun. After the death of the mother, the father really felt the need for the family to be together.

St. John Vianney did not have much formal education at all because of the French revolution (he received his First Holy Communion in a barn from a non-juring priest that was in hiding and had stopped at the Vianney farm). He had a great deal of difficulty with seminary studies because they were all done in Latin (a subject he had not been taught on the farm). His holiness was so impressive that he was actually tutored through a great deal of seminary using his native language in subject areas while trying to learn enough Latin(and persisted despite an interlude of being drafted and in hiding as a desserter - he got seperated from his unit and couldn't find his way back - not an intentional desserter) and eventually ordained, although he was initially restricted from hearing confessions.

St. Thomas Moore taught his daughter himself. She was known to be quite intelligent and it was considered unusual at the time to have taught girls things like Latin, etc. which St. Thomas Moore did teach to her.

The American Indians had their own way of teaching their children from the home environment - not a lot of academics, but what the children needed to know to function well in their culture/society. Research some of the Great Indian chiefs, perhaps. They certainly had a great nature study.

Without doing research this is off the top of my head.

What do you consider homeschooling? I suspect there is a great deal of overlapping in many people's education. Is it homeschooling now when a family uses extensive private tutors or does the parent have to do the majority of the actual teaching? Most wealthy families in certain time periods actually hired a variety of tutors for their children (and sometimes a neighbor or two would join in) during the majority of their education and then sent them off to college (or a more advanced monastery school if they showed a certain talent/ inclination for book learning). This was true of many of the Founding Father's, I believe.

I suspect you would also find a number of pioneer children taught by parents before there were enough people in an area to afford hiring a local teacher. How would you classify the early pioneer schools (would they compare more to the Kolbe and Seton day schools) They were parent founded and run. The local parents decided on the teacher and shared the expense of lodging and feeding them and the salary.

Thanks for the ideas, Janet. So many of the Founding Fathers (and their wives!) *were* homeschooled, and certainly royalty in Europe were primarily "home" (or palace!) -educated. Still, I was looking for name recognition that would register with Europeans, (more specifically, with Spaniards). Certainly the Little Flower would fall into the category, as well as St. Thomas More!

Thanks again.

Kelly,
You have me intrigued...I had never thought of this. So I did a search on Google. I found quite a few saints on Patron Saints Index. I searched for Patron Saints Index "educated at home." Here's who came up:

Teresa of Avila
Blessed Mark of Aviano
Gaspar Bertoni (Stigmatines used to run our parish!)
Blessed Anna Rosa Gattorno
Saint Teresa Eustochio Verzeri
Blessed María del Tránsito de Jesús Sacramentado
Pope Alexander VII
Pope Leo XI
Blessed Maria Cristina dell'Immacolata Concezione
Blessed Mark of Aviano
Macrina the Younger

The only other phrase that worked was "educated by her mother"....but I'm sure there are more.

I was thinking about St. Ignatius, after his injury, recouperating and reading to self-educate...

Kelly,

You might double check on St. Thomas More. My son just did a report on him and said that a tutor was hired to teach his daughter because Thomas didn't have the time. Not sure where this came from (maybe Wegemer's tape from EWTN?), or if maybe he homeschooled part of the time and hired a tutor for the rest. . . Also, I think this was the same daughter who tried to argue him out of standing up for his faith. I think Wegemer labeled this a failure of her education. (Part of the video was watched during a co-op class - sorry I don't have first-hand knowledge of it!)

Oops. Anne Marie, your son got it right. I forgot that St. Thomas More did hire a Latin tutor for his daughter which was unusual for the time. And yes she did try to persuade her father to sign the Act of Succession but I'm not sure it was all the same paper that everyone else had to sign. I do believe it was a momentary weakness as they did flee England for a time, I think (but don't quote me on that as my facts may be a little jumbled these days!)

My dd Maddelyn was saint Margaret of Scotland for All Saint's Day.......turns out Saint Margaret tutored all of her own children.........and, since one of her daughters was declared a saint.....Saint Maud.....I guess you could say Saint Maud was homeschooled!

We have added Saint Margaret to our litany of saints for hsers!

So, Kelly...........what are you doing with this info? Seems you have something in mind !

Well, thanks for all the good input. As for having "something in mind", Chari, (that sounds so, well, Machiavellian )nothing devious going on, I promise I just needed some info for a speech I'm giving at a conference in Spain... this Friday...(gulp)! The topic is "The Family as a School for Freedom", but what they're really interested in is homeschooling. So, I'm making a pitch for Catholic homeschooling. Thought a few Great Catholic Names to add to the Homeschoolers List would be eyecatching.

BTW, I find lots of lists of famous hs-ers on the internet, mostly Protestants, and all compiled BY Protestants. Maybe one of you Blog Queens out there should put up a list of famous Catholic homeschoolers just to keep things balanced!

Thanks again for the help.

Kelly FROM Florida, but IN Spain (ole!)

Thank you all for your thoughtful, and HELPFUL, responses! Back from Spain, the presentation was a success (at least I didn't faint or anything... ) and the audience seemed truly interested. I used all those saints names you gave me...invoking their assistance the while! All in all, a wonderful experience. Spain needs our prayers, in the grips of political correctitude much like our own, only worse in many ways. I bet last weeks MILLION AND A HALF person demonstration against the socialist government's current proposal to take God out of the classroom didn't even make the news here.

Thanks again for all your help! Kelly, back in FL

This is an old thread and I know Kelly doesn't need the info for her speech any longer, but I came across this press release about the soon to be canonized Mother Theodore Guerin. The biographical information on her here indicates she was home educated. Another for our list.

Ooooh, thanks for resurrecting this thread, Mary. I never saw it the first time around and would love to compile this information for the kids. My 15-yo especially would really enjoy this.
